Epworth Stitchers showcase ministry during Indy festivals

The Spirit & Place festival features 71 events for all ages.

INDIANAPOLIS - Prayer shawls for hospital patients, blankets for wounded soldiers, layettes for young single mothers - the Epworth Stitchers have made them all.

Now the Stitchers will showcase their sewing and knitting ministry to the Indianapolis community as part of the 2007 Spirit & Place Festival, a community-wide celebration of the arts, humanities and religion.

The Spirit & Place festival features 71 events for all ages, all centering on this year's theme: Living Generously. Spirit & Place magazine's listing all events are available online at www.spiritandplace.org.

The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Epworth Church.

Part of a growing sewing and knitting ministry among many religious faiths, the Stitchers will offer a workshop that includes a display, panel discussion, conversation, resource information, and the opportunity to assemble layettes for expectant mothers at an alternative Indianapolis public school.

The panel, moderated by Jodi Perras, includes Theresa Arnold, educator with IPS Learning Center for Pregnant and Parenting Teens, Epworth Stitchers Cathy Alley and Jane Billheimer, plus Brownie Troop leader Julie Borum.

Participants will explore questions such as the following: What happens to both the giver and recipient when handcrafted items are provided during times of need? What role do prayer and meditation play in the gift's creation? How has this ministry encouraged a spirit of generosity across cultural, geographic, and generational lines?

Participants are asked to bring baby lotion and baby wipes to include in the layettes. Admission is free, but pre-registration is encouraged. Presented by Epworth UMC at www.epworthindy.org, IPS Learning Center for Pregnant and Parenting Teens, and Brownie Troops #1548 and #944.
