MICHAEL ANDERSON LED BLOOMINGTON DIST.

The Rev. Michael A. Anderson, Sr., 52, died at home in Bloomington Friday evening, Oct. 18 after a long struggle with a series of critical illnesses involving a liver transplant and most recently cancer. Rev. Anderson had served as superintendent of the South Indiana Conference's Bloomington District for the past two years. A Celebration of his life was held Oct. 23 at first UMC, Bloomington. "The death of Michael Anderson is a great loss to the South Indiana Conference," Bishop Woodie W. White said. "His love for the Church and considerable gifts had far greater impact than many realize. . He faced death with faith and dignity, and in so doing was an outstanding witness to us all."

DEMICHELE TO RESIGN AT YEAR END

After nearly 13 years as Director of Communications for Indiana Area UMC and editor of the Hoosier UM News, Lynne DeMichele announced recently that she would be leaving the post as of Dec. 31. More information will appear in the November HUM News. Bishop Woodie W. White has named a search committee led by the Rev. James Jones, his executive assistant. CHURCHES ASKED TO PROVIDE E-MAIL ADDRESS

Each local church convenes a "charge conference" each year during the fourth quarter. The purpose is to discuss/approve ministry plans and budget for the coming year. Each church will be asked to provide an "official " e-mail address for the church, so that important announcements can be disseminated in a timely, practically cost-free manner. The addresses will comprise an Indiana Area-wide e-mail data base.

RENEWING, CONFESSING MOVEMENTS MEET IN INDY THIS WEEKEND

Over 500 people representing nine different mainline denominations are gathering in Indianapolis at the Adams Mark Hotel (airport) Oct. 24-26 to build networks for renewal. Tonight's plenary session will examine the importance of marriage and family. The Confessing Movement, headed by State Senator (and United Methodist) Pat Miller, is hosting the event. METHODIST WORLD LEADERS CALL FOR PEACE

OSLO, Norway (UMNS) -- Methodists around the world are being asked to pray and "use every means at their disposal" to bring about a peaceful resolution to the violent situations in Iraq, the Palestinian territories and Israel, and Zimbabwe. The World Methodist Council's executive committee adopted three resolutions on peace during its Sept. 16-22 meeting calling on leaders and members of all Methodist churches to contact the United Nations to urge Iraq to comply with U.N. security resolutions. 

CHURCH-WIDE GIVING INCREASES

UMNS -- Giving to United Methodist church-wide apportioned funds is up 1.7 percent in the first nine months of 2002 compared with the same period last year, according to reports by the General Council on Finance and Administration. Total giving is up more than $1 million to $63 million, or 49% of the total apportionment for the year. 

UMW OPPOSES WAR ON IRAQ

Newscope -- During their Oct. 18-21 annual meeting, directors of the Women's Division, UM Board of Global Ministries, endorsed a statement reaffirming "its opposition to war as the instrument for resolving the continuing conflict with Iraq." Further, the statement presses for lifting the sanctions against Iraq and urges all governments, most particularly the U.S.A., and the Security Council of the U.N. to pursue peaceful means in resolving conflicts with Iraq."
