Farewell arrangements
for Governor O'Bannon
Hoosiers will be asked to celebrate Gov.
Frank O'Bannon's life the way he lived it -- simply and without fanfare.
The body of Indiana's 47th governor won't lie in a casket in the
Statehouse Rotunda. There will be no public funeral.
On Thursday
According to press reports, former first lady
Judy O'Bannon has asked friends to set up a memorial display from noon
to 10 p.m. Thursday, September 18 in the Rotunda. Visitors will be able
to leave messages for the O'Bannon family or jot down memories about
O'Bannon in special books. The main display will be O'Bannon's official
portrait, painted by Michael Chelich of Hammond and unveiled in December
2001.
On Friday
At noon Friday, September 19, an interfaith
service will be conducted on the west steps of the Statehouse, where
O'Bannon was sworn in for his first term as governor in January 1997.
This week
Memorial events will be held in Corydon,
O'Bannon's southern Indiana hometown. Details haven't been announced,
but according to press reports, one event is likely to be staged on the
town square where O'Bannon first announced he wanted to be governor.
The late governor's spokeswoman Mary Dieter
said, Judy O'Bannon has requested that her husband's body be cremated in
preparation for burial. The burial will be a private ceremony at
Corydon's Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Governor O'Bannon was an active member of The
United Methodist Church in Corydon where he sang in the choir. The
O'Bannons also were active in the Central Avenue United Methodist Church
on the north side of Indianapolis. Among other things, Governor O'Bannon
worked with Bishop White on the Bishop's Initiative for Children in
Poverty.
