Remembering 9-11-01
As we approach the anniversary of the
horrific events of September 11, 2001 we recognize that our nation
continues to heal from the tragedy of that day. As Christians we know we
have hope and we know our hope is in God. The tensions in our world
continue to have a major impact on our lives. As we approach this
anniversary we continue to mourn and yet we continue to discover the
amazing ways that God is with us and helps us with every need.
In the aftermath of 9-11-01 it is
understandable that people live with increased levels of fear and
tension. The continuing threats to our security and the efforts to
prevent further terrorism can cause us to live with great anxiety. But
we know that our security is not in metal detectors, bomb sniffing dogs,
armed security guards or military strength. Our security, our safety,
our future is in God's hands. God is our refuge and strength, our rock
and our salvation. The Lord is the strength of my life, whom shall I
fear?
For us as Christians this is a time of great
opportunity. As people search for answers and security, we can point
them to the one who can meet their needs. We can share our faith in God
and tell others how our faith has helped us. We can pray for each other,
our nation and our world. We know the power of prayer and the difference
it can make.
As we approach this anniversary, let it be a
call to prayer and witness. The more we pray and the more we share our
faith, the sooner our world will become a more peaceful place. We can
make a difference in the lives of people who need to find a source of
security. Our faith can overcome fear. Our love can overcome hatred.
Dear God,
As we remember the terror and tragedy of
9-11-01, strengthen us so that we might share our faith with those who
live in fear. Guide us so that we might live our lives as those who
know our strength is in you. Comfort us and help us share that comfort
with others who mourn. Renew our joy in our relationship with you,
that we might be a source of hope to those who live in sorrow. Inspire
us to be the candle in someone else's darkness. Revive our faith that
we might share with all the people we meet the reason for the hope
that is in us. As we, your people, humble ourselves, seek your face,
turn from our sin and pray, hear our prayers, heal our land and bring
peace to our world. Let us be instruments of healing in your name. We
pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, the Christ who defeated death
and gives us life. Amen.
