Canadian scholar featured in interfaith dialogue at
CTS about Jews, Christians and the silver screen
INDIANAPOLIS -- Dr. Adele Reinhartz, a Canadian scholar specializing on
Judaism and Christianity in the Greco-Roman era, will be the featured
speaker for the 23rd Annual Forum on Jewish-Christian Relations at
Christian Theological Seminary March 22.
"Jews, Christians and the Silver Screen" will be the theme of the
five-hour program co-sponsored by CTS and the Jewish Community Relations
Council, with financial assistance from Lilly Endowment.
Reinhartz, dean of graduate studies and research at Wilfrid Laurier
University in Canada, says she will analyze ways in which Hollywood films
describe Jesus within Judaic contexts, using film clips to document her
points. Reinhartz also will comment on Mel Gibson's film The Passion
of The Christ and the current controversy suggesting it may encourage
anti-Semitism.
Responding to her presentation will be Rabbi Jonathan Adland of
Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, Dean Carolyn Higginbotham of CTS and Dr.
Clark Williamson, emeritus professor at CTS.
The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will require a
registration fee of $40 that includes lunch. The registration
deadline is March 15. Detailed information is available at
317-931-4224 or by Internet at
LifeEd@cts.edu.
In preparation for the March 22 event, CTS will host a special showing
of the widely-acclaimed film The Gospel of John at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March
21, in Room 164. The film, which features Henry Ian Cusick as Jesus and
narration by Christopher Plummer, is open to the public. Admission is
free.
