Mission distribution center swings into action after severe
thunderstorms hit Midwest states
Flood bucket kits needed
CHATHAM, Ill. -- Many communities at Pawnee, Divernon and Jacksonville
surrounding Springfield, Ill. were hard hit by treacherous weather May 25
that produced tornadoes, hail, rain, lightning and high winds.
Dave and Jan Calley, directors of the United Methodist-related Midwest
Mission Distribution Center based here received an emergency phone call
from the Rev. Troy Benitone, pastor of Pawnee United Methodist Church in
Illinois, requesting shelter for Pawnee residents whose homes had suffered
extensive storm damage.
A bus delivered 26 men, women, teenagers and children to the dormitory
on the campus of the center. The Calleys, along with the Revs. Glen and
Jan Stewart, distribution center volunteer coordinators, made the dorm
ready by providing bedding and comfort for the tornado survivors. Soon the
American Red Cross provided snacks and began interviewing those in need.
The distribution center and The American Red Cross are working together to
minister to these families.
Tom Hazelwood, of the United Methodist Committee on Relief's Disaster
Relief Office in Washington, D.C., called the distribution center
requesting flood buckets for Iowa. Calley expects that by week's end all
remaining flood buckets in stock at the Midwest Mission Distribution
Center will be disbursed to Illinois storm survivors. The distribution
center has responded to flooded and storm damaged areas this summer in
Minnesota, North Dakota and Northern Illinois by delivering hundreds of
flood buckets and cleanup supplies.
For those wanting to contribute to this relief ministry, an offering
and materials for flood buckets, please contact the Midwest Mission
Distribution Center at 217-483-7911 or email
