Bishops
to be elected and assigned this week
INDIANAPOLIS -- Each of Indiana's North and South Conferences of The
United Methodist Church will be represented by 24 delegates in the
election and assignment of bishops this week during the North Central
Jurisdictional Conference in Davenport, Iowa.
Two Hoosiers, the Revs. Mark Fenstermacher of Elkhart and Gregory
McGarvey of Carmel are two of 16 endorsed candidates seeking to be elected
bishop. Balloting will begin on Wednesday afternoon July 14. Three bishops
will be elected to replace three retiring bishops. All ordained elders in
good standing are eligible to be elected bishop. Votes of sixty percent of
the conference's 424 delegates are needed to elect a bishop.
An
announcement of the assignment of the jurisdiction's ten bishops,
including Indiana, will be made Saturday morning, July 17 at the
conclusion of the conference. Indiana will receive a new bishop on Sept.
1. Current Bishop Woodie W. White retires next month and moves to Atlanta.
Balloting results, elections of bishops and the assignment of bishops
will be announced on the North Central Jurisdictional Conference Web site
at www.ncjumc.org.
Announcements of episcopal elections and assignments also will be
made on the Indiana Area Web site at
www.inareaumc.org.
