Bishop Coyner elected
Discipleship president
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Indiana Area Bishop Michael J. Coyner was elected
today (Sept. 29) as president of the United Methodist General Board of
Discipleship for a four-year term during the church agency's board fall
meeting here. GBOD is based in Nashville.
Upon his election, Bishop Coyner said, "I am pleased to serve as
President of General Board of Discipleship because this agency deals
with issues which are at the heart of the church such as worship,
education, stewardship, discipleship. This is an important time for GBOD
as we begin the new Division on Ministries with Youth People which was
approved by the General Conference. The GBOD also is welcoming the
initiative Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century, which
now will be housed with GBOD.
"So it is an important time to provide leadership for GBOD, and I am
glad to be working with a good staff here including the Rev. Karen
Greenwalt, the general secretary."
A complete story of GBOD's work will come after the board's meeting
this week.
