MMDC Responds to Eastern Ohio Flooding
On September 19, 2004, Eastern Ohio was hit with heavy rains and
major flooding. These remnants of Hurricane Ivan swamped nearly 16
counties. In the town of Marietta, over 1700 people vacated their homes
and sought out shelter in nearby areas. Over the next couple of days,
the Ohio River crested over at ten feet above flood stage, leaving
streets, schools, homes, and buildings flooded.
The Midwest Mission Distribution Center responded to this disaster
immediately after MMDC Board member, Pam Monteith initiated contact with
interim director, Glen Stewart. Glen then contacted Karen Upson at The
Ohio Valley Flood Relief Center to see how the Center could help. The
first shipment was delivered by Jamie and April of Ohio. They delivered
4825 pounds of flood buckets, health kits, cleaning supplies, power
washers, and other miscellaneous supplies. Additional shipments were
made to Byesville, Bridgeport, and Marietta, Ohio. These shipments
contained around 320 flood buckets, 1502 health kits, 1317 pounds of
bottled water and miscellaneous cleaning supplies. Volunteers from
Indiana helped load the truck Wednesday morning, September 22nd. These
supplies were delivered by Bud Ritter and Jim Olson.
MMDC continues to receive flood bucket supplies, but is also in great
need of health kits. If you are interested in collecting supplies for
either kit, please find a complete listing at our website,
