Christians in the Holy Land
A reception for Janet Lahr Lewis
Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ
501 West Berry, Forth Wayne, Indiana
Saturday evening, October 2 7 pm
Sunday morning, October 3 9:30 am
One of our United Methodist missionaries assigned to the Middle East
is scheduled to speak in Forth Wayne in October on the plight of
Palestinian Christians.
Janet Lahr Lewis works at the Sabeel Ecumenical Palestinian
Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem. Her assignment is through the
United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries. The Sabeel Center
runs interfaith programs for Arab Palestinian Christians and Muslims --
clergy, lay, women and children. The center also is one of the most
prolific theological interpreters of the plight of Palestinian
Christians for the West. Sabeel's director, Father Naim Ateek, an
Anglican priest, writes continually about the issues concerning
Palestinian Christians from a liberation theology perspective. His best
known book is Justice and Only Justice.
According to Lewis, Ateek and others, the Christian communities in
the Holy Land are oppressed and beleaguered. They are facing critical
times, including their possible extinction within our lifetimes. Join us
to hear the story of one organization who is speaking out for human
rights, for justice, and for non-violent solutions to the complex
problems facing our sisters and brothers in the Christian Holy Land.
At the reception on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 2, Lewis will speak
briefly about the Apartheid Wall's effect upon Christians in the Holy
Land and their general state, and answer questions.
Lewis also is scheduled to speak to Dr. Spath's Adult class at
Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ on Sunday morning, Oct.
3, at 9:30 a.m. She will speak specifically about the work of The Sabeel
Center which is supported by a number of Christian churches in the
United States, including our General Board of Global Ministries, the
United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
