Hurricane Relief Update
For Thursday, Sept. 01, 2005
BOTH INDIANA CONFERENCES PLUGGED INTO INVOAD
Hoosier United Methodists are working with the Indiana Voluntary
Organizations Active in Disaster, a state government agency,
coordinating relief efforts with the state. Both Indiana Conferences'
Disaster Coordinators (listed below) are meeting by conference call each
morning to coordinate United Methodist activities with other non-profit
organizations working with the State of Indiana on Hurricane Katrina
relief efforts. Part of that activity includes INVOAD's connection with
the United Methodist Committee on Relief. UMCOR helped the first wave of
emergency volunteers who will be leaving for Mobile, Alabama the
beginning of next week. These Hoosier professionals will be hosted by
the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church in Mobile from Sept. 6
through 13. Indiana volunteers, including United Methodists, will be
working with hurricane survivors in the Mobile, Alabama area.
HOOSIER DISASTER RELIEF FUND
The state has established the new Hoosier Disaster Relief Fund to
provide funds for Hurricane Katrina disaster relief efforts. If you have
employers wanting to contribute to hurricane disaster relief, but who
don't want to give to UMCOR or any religiously affiliated agency,
encourage them to contribute to the Hoosier Disaster Relief Fund.
Contributions are being accepted by Old City Bank and National City Bank
or by mailing contributions to Hoosier Disaster Relief Fund, PO Box
2123, Elkhart, IN 46514

CLOTHING ADDED TO SOUTH CONFERENCE NEEDS
Clothing has been added to the South Conference disaster relief
needs. Please observe the following guidelines. Bring items next to new
or what you would wear, practical, clean, mended and folded.
Please place each item in a zip lock plastic bag with size marked, then
in a plastic tote container with exterior labels indicating male or
female, size, type of item, infant items, disposable diapers, receiving
blankets, etc.
HOSTING HURRICANE KATRINA REFUGEES
This word is from UMCOR's Tom Hazelwood. Please refer all requests to
host refugees to the Red Cross as they would be the most-likely
organization to organize such an effort. This would be to prevent
a duplication of efforts and to allow the various relief organizations
to focus on their areas of expertise.

CONFERENCE COORDINATORS OF DISASTER RESPONSE AND VIM COORDINATORS
If your church is planning a volunteer-in-mission response to assist
Hurricane Katrina survivors, here is the contact information for each
conference's Coordinator for Disaster Response and Volunteer-in-Mission
Coordinators. Volunteers in Mission conference coordinators can provide
details on creating and training a team as well as scheduling. The
disaster areas are not yet ready for general volunteer workers, but
teams can be organized now for deployment when the time is ready.
