VOLUNTEER WITH BOX TRUCK NEEDED TO TRANSPORT HURRICANE RELIEF SUPPLIES TO TRUCKING COMPANY IN INDIANAPOLIS

The South Indiana Conference disaster-relief team needs a volunteer that has a 12-foot or 14-foot box truck to pick up hurricane relief supplies from local churches and deliver them to the semi-truck taking the supplies on to UMCOR warehouses for distribution in the south. Contact Duane Fleener at 317-718-0710.

The trailer that was at Lawrence UMC will NOT be replaced. Indianapolis area people who have materials can unload them at Buchanan Hauling, 2506 California Street in Indianapolis. This site is south of I-70 just off West Street (turn at the blinking light). The South Indiana Conference is sharing the loading of that trailer with the North Indiana Conference. Prior to arrival, call Brian Buchanan at 317-919-2025 to make arrangements for drop-off.

SOUTH INDIANA CONFERENCE VIM TEAMS ASKED TO TAKE SUPPLIES

Carolyn Ellis, SIC Volunteer in Mission Coordinator, and Bob Babcock, SIC disaster relief coordinator, request Volunteer in Mission Teams heading to Mississippi and Louisiana to take building supplies with them on trips to these two states. Bring 5/8-inch plywood, ?-inch sheet rock, sheetrock mud and tape, 2x4s precut any length and nails. Gulfport, Miss. Volunteers also need to take roofing supplies as well as those listed. These basic materials are in short supply in disaster relief areas. Also, remember to take building tools and power equipment to use on the job. No tools will be available on site.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HEAVY DUTY CLEAN-UP

Carolyn Ellis, SIC Volunteer in Mission Coordinator, says volunteers are needed for heavy-duty cleanup in Mississippi and Louisiana. This must be done before rebuilding homes can take place. Volunteers in the South Indiana Conference are requested to complete SIC VIM forms and VIM insurance forms available online at the South Indiana Conference Web site at www.sicumc.org. For more information, contact Elsie Miller -- Adm. Asst. - emiller@sicumc.org -- 800-919-8160 ext. 221 or Carolyn Ellis - VIM Coordinator at64cousin_ellis@yahoo.com - 812-882-2716.

RURAL AREAS OF MISSISSIPPI STILL CALLING FOR EMERGENCY HELP FOLLOWING KATRINA, RITA, SAYS CHURCH WORLD SERVICE

NEW YORK (CWS) -- In southern Mississippi this week, Church World Service (CWS) disaster responder Tim Johnson says the ecumenical agency is helping community groups begin to organize long-term recovery resources for Hurricanes Katrina's and Rita's most vulnerable survivors, but says Johnson, long-term recovery looks a long way off for many along the Gulf Coast and even farther inland. He says some rural areas like Lucedale, Miss., weren't the super strike zones that Biloxi was during Hurricane Katrina, but they experienced significant damage and so far they are still outside the net of major response. Johnson is one of CWS's team of responders in the devastated Gulf Coast who are assessing ongoing emergency needs but are particularly focusing on establishing new community-based, long-term recovery organizations that will serve survivors with unmet needs. Were particularly concerned about those rural areas that get less focus, he says. Yet, more than a month after Katrina and now following Rita's hit, Johnson says in some areas of the Louisiana bayou country and coastal Miss. and Ala., chronic emergency needs are just beginning to be heard and met. Like UMCOR, CWS continues to distribute relief supplies and issue cash grants for relief and recovery across the region. The global relief, development and refugee resettlement agencies latest shipment of 10,000 blankets and 10,000 Gift of the Heart Health Kits was expedited to distribution points in the Gulf Coast area over the weekend, and a next shipment is pending. So far, Church World Service has shipped more than $1.3 million in material assistance to Katrina-and-Rita-affected areas. CWS works hand-in-hand with UMCOR and other denominational relief efforts in assisting our faith partners in the Gulf Coast region. Updates on CWS can be found by logging on to www.churchworldservice.org.
