VOLUNTEER WITH BOX TRUCK NEEDED TO TRANSPORT HURRICANE RELIEF SUPPLIES TO TRUCKING COMPANY IN INDIANAPOLIS

The South Indiana Conference disaster-relief team needs a volunteer that has a 12-foot or 14-foot box truck to pick up hurricane relief supplies from local churches and deliver them to the semi-truck taking the supplies on to UMCOR warehouses for distribution in the south. Contact Duane Fleener at 317- 718-0710.

The trailer that was at Lawrence UMC will NOT be replaced. Indianapolis area people who have materials can unload them at Buchanan Hauling, 2506 California Street in Indianapolis. This site is south of I-70 just off West Street (turn at the blinking light). The South Indiana Conference is sharing the loading of that trailer with the North Indiana Conference. Prior to arrival, call Brian Buchanan at 317-919-2025 to make arrangements for drop-off.

SOUTH INDIANA CONFERENCE VIM TEAMS ASKED TO TAKE SUPPLIES

Carolyn Ellis, SIC Volunteer in Mission Coordinator, and Bob Babcock, SIC disaster relief coordinator, request Volunteer in Mission Teams heading to Mississippi and Louisiana to take building supplies with them on trips to these two states. Bring 5/8-inch plywood, ?-inch sheet rock, sheetrock mud and tape, 2x4s precut any length and nails. Gulfport, Miss. Volunteers need to take roofing supplies as well as those listed. These basic materials are in short supply in disaster relief areas. Also, remember to take building tools and power equipment to use on the job. No tools will be available on site. VIM team leaders are encouraged to call their host churches to assess material needs.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HEAVY DUTY CLEAN-UP

Carolyn Ellis, SIC Volunteer in Mission Coordinator, says volunteers are needed for heavy-duty cleanup in Mississippi and Louisiana. This must be done before rebuilding homes can take place. Volunteers in the South Indiana Conference are requested to complete SIC VIM forms and VIM insurance forms available online at the South Indiana Conference Web site at www.sicumc.org. For more information, contact Elsie Miller -- Admin. Asst. - emiller@sicumc.org -- 800-919-8160 ext. 221 or Carolyn Ellis - VIM Coordinator at64cousin_ellis@yahoo.com - 812-882-2716.

HOME DEPOT DOUBLING VALUE OF GIFT CARDS FOR HURRICANE CLEAN-UP, REPAIR

North Indiana Conference VIM Coordinator Bonnie Albert reports that generous and caring people continue to call and inquire about what they can do to help the situation in the Gulf States area. Here's something that came to Lori Lewis Cain of the Lafayette District. The Lafayette District received a call from the Regional United Methodist Disaster Response Office located in Gateway UMC at Gulfport, Miss., saying HOME DEPOT just announced that they would double the value of gift cards purchased at HOME DEPOT for use in purchasing building supplies for HURRICANE CLEANUP and REPAIR! This regional district welcomes gift cards from Lowes, HOME DEPOT (Double Value) and Wal-Mart. Send gift cards to:

Regional United Methodist Disaster Response Office
Gateway United Methodist Church
16020 South Swan Road
Gulfport, MS 39503

The Gateway UMC has two ministries, one of which is working with the homeless. The church states their homeless congregation is calling to report they want to return to Gulfport! Clean -up and repairs are the first steps to make their dreams come true!

MERIDIAN STREET UMC OFFERS TWO HOUSES FOR EVACUEE FAMILIES

Meridian Street United Methodist Church offered two furnished houses for displaced families of Hurricane Katrina. One property is now occupied by a mother and her two-year-old daughter. The mother, who was studying to be a paralegal, is expecting her second child on Christmas Day. The other property is occupied by a mother and her 11-year-old son. She also has her two brothers living with her. The church was eager to help these young families get settled in Indianapolis. Church members enjoyed getting the properties ready. Carpets were cleaned in one house, while brand-new carpet was installed in the other -- all by members of the congregation. Both families have completely furnished cabinets stocked with food. The church purchased long-distance telephone cards, TVs, microwaves and computers. The Rev. Marvin Singleton, associate pastor in charge of Outreach and Missions, said some of the members knew just how to add a "homey" touch. He believes it is important that the families have a point of contact for questions or needs they may have. When possible, he suggests providing gift cards to the families to help give them a sense of independence and ownership.

RELIEF VOLUNTEERS ASKED TO CHECK IN WITH CONFERENCE VIM OR UMCOR

The United Methodist Committee on Relief is asking concerned individuals who want to help with hurricane relief efforts not to travel to hurricane affected regions without first making arrangements with an organization such as Conference UM Volunteers in Mission or UMCOR. For more information, visit http://gbgm-umc.org/vim/.  There are also many ways individuals can help with efforts through their local churches. Cash donations have now reached $11 million, with $2.7 million coming through the Internet. In South Indiana Conference call Elsie Miller at 800-783-5138. In the North Indiana Conference call Bonnie Albert at 219-464-1447.
