NOBLESVILLE TEAM PREPARES FOR DISASTER RELIEF IN MOBILE

Associate Pastor of First UMC, Noblesville, Ind. is taking a second team of 15 people from South Indiana Conference to Mobile, AL November 27-December 3. The team is working through Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church in their Disaster Relief Ministry, which is a partner with UMCOR. There are currently five spots available if you are interested please contact Pastor Jim Moon III, jimm@nfumc.net, 317-773-2500 ext. 202 for more information.

RED CROSS SUGGESTS RUBBER GLOVES UNDER WORK GLOVES

Suggestions: Wear rubber gloves under work gloves to help protect against whatever is in the mud and debris. Also the Red Cross was vaccinating everyone working in Dulac with Hep A (fecal matter), not Hep B (blood related) as well as tetanus. We found the big flat scoop shovels very helpful in removing debris and mud. The only other thing is to come prepared with a flexible disposition. ~Mary Cress (Most UMVIM'ers will already have Heb B and I think you should get that also if you don't already have it! ~Lorna)

Returning team members and leaders -- please consider yourself a valuable resource for the next teams heading to the Gulf Area. Report anything you would have wanted to know before you went!

From Rev. Connie Thomas, LA Louisiana UMC Storm Recovery Center: Transportation: Teams are responsible for their own transportation to their assignment. The airport into New Orleans is operational. Your on-site coordinator will be able to provide your team with directions to your work site. Housing: Some of our work sites are able to provide limited housing. Please indicate on the intake form if you will need housing. If you are a self-sufficient team, please indicate if you will need hookups, etc. Medical: It is recommended that all team members be vaccinated for tetanus before arriving. Teams working in the New Orleans area are also advised to begin the Hepatitis B series. All work teams should have a first aid kit and a medical release form for each team member, which the team leader should keep at the work site.

The following OSHA web site indicates they have pre-printed cards on how to take precautions when dealing with mold and other items. Contact OSHA if you still have questions.

It includes six new study guides that connect our United Methodist Social Principles to the stories emerging from the storm; a letter to the General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) from William W. Hutchinson, Bishop of Louisiana; a statement and call to action from GBCS; and an application for special GBCS grants to address the needs of ethnic communities affected by the storms. HOME DEPOT DOUBLING VALUE OF GIFT CARDS FOR HURRICANE CLEAN-UP, REPAIR

North Indiana Conference VIM Coordinator Bonnie Albert reports that generous and caring people continue to call and inquire about what they can do to help the situation in the Gulf States area. Here's something that came to Lori Lewis Cain of the Lafayette District. The Lafayette District received a call from the Regional United Methodist Disaster Response Office located in Gateway UMC at Gulfport, Miss., saying HOME DEPOT just announced that they would double the value of gift cards purchased at HOME DEPOT for use in purchasing building supplies for HURRICANE CLEANUP and REPAIR! This regional district welcomes gift cards from Lowes, HOME DEPOT (Double Value) and Wal-Mart.

Send gift cards to:
Regional United Methodist Disaster Response Office
Gateway United Methodist Church
16020 South Swan Road
Gulfport, MS 39503

The Gateway UMC has two ministries, one of which is working with the homeless. The church states their homeless congregation is calling to report they want to return to Gulfport! Clean -up and repairs are the first steps to make their dreams come true!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HEAVY DUTY CLEAN-UP

Ellis says volunteers are now needed for heavy-duty cleanup in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Texas. Clean up must be completed before rebuilding homes can take place. For more information, contact Elsie Miller at emiller@sicumc.org or by calling 800-919-8160 or 812-336-0186 ext. 221, or Carolyn Ellis, SIC VIM Coordinator, at at64cousin@yahoo.com or by calling 812-882-2716.

SOUTH INDIANA CONFERENCE VOLUNTEER TEAMS ASKED TO TAKE SUPPLIES

Carolyn Ellis, SIC Volunteer in Mission Coordinator, and Bob Babcock, SIC disaster relief coordinator, request Volunteer in Mission Teams heading to Mississippi and Louisiana to take building supplies with them on trips to these two states. Bring 5/8-inch plywood, ?-inch sheet rock, sheetrock mud and tape, 2x4s precut any length and nails. Gulfport, Miss. Volunteers need to take roofing supplies as well as those listed. These basic materials are in short supply in disaster relief areas. Also, remember to take building tools and power equipment to use on the job. No tools will be available on site. VIM team leaders are encouraged to call their host churches to assess material needs.

HELP NEEDED WITH THANKSGIVING PREPARATIONS FOR SEASHORE DISTRICT

Volunteers of all ages area needed to make placemats for the Thanksgiving Day meal being planned for the Seashore District in Mississippi that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Suggestion -- on 11-inch by 17-inch copy paper, draw around your hands -- the thumb becomes the head of the turkey, the fingers are the feathers, then add feet and comb. Label placemats with common names such as grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, aunt, uncle, or cousin, etc. Including a prayer is fine. Fall leaves are fine. (Do not say "from our house to your house" since many houses were destroyed. If you can make ten or one hundred, these placemats will be appreciated. Volunteers are planning on serving 3,500 dinners on Thanksgiving. Please send placemats to Attn: Elsie Miller, South Indiana Conference, 1520 S. Liberty, Dr, Bloomington, IN 47403-5167. The deadline is Nov. 16.
