Volunteers needed for the Baker Chapel United Methodist Church Rebuild Project in the Evansville District of the South Indiana Conference

The pastor and members of Baker Chapel United Methodist Church in DeGonia Springs, Ind., broke ground for their new facility on July 30, 2006 and are now in the process of making arrangements to accommodate the many volunteers that have called wanting to help with the rebuild.

Volunteer workers are being sought for construction and for meal preparation. Volunteer construction workers will undertake such supervised tasks as framing, electrical, plumbing, insulation, drywall, acoustical ceiling, interior trim, carpentry, painting, flooring, and clean-up. Active or retired contractors and tradesmen are invited to share their skills and to guide other, less-skilled volunteers. In addition, volunteer cooks are needed to provide daily meals for the construction workers. Teens are welcome, but a parent or guardian must accompany 14 to17-year-olds.

Each volunteer will need to complete the Volunteer Registration Form, and the United Methodist Volunteer in Mission (UMVIM) Accident Insurance Application. Send completed forms with the $100 registration fee to the South Indiana Conference Center (the registration fee includes the cost of the insurance). If room and board are not needed, contact Elsie Miller regarding registration fee waiver. Teams of 10-15 construction workers plus five for meal preparation/clean-up are encouraged. If possible, please submit per team all forms with registration fees in one envelope. Applications are available at: www.inareaumc.org or contact Elsie Miller, emiller@sicumc.org 800-919-8160 Ext. 221.

Once the paperwork and the registration fee have been received, you will be contacted regarding dates available and confirmation.

Housing will be provided by Main Street UMC in Boonville. Please prepare to bring your own cot, sheets, blanket or sleeping bag, pillow and bath towel.

Volunteers are asked to provide their own basic hand tools, including nail apron, 16-ounce hammer, tape measure, square, screwdrivers, pliers, utility knife, and pencil. Include work gloves and a hard hat. Additional tools or equipment that may assist the work effort are welcome.
