Mission News of South Indiana Conference

Edited by Elsie Miller

Volunteers and Funding Needed to Help Rebuild Baker Chapel UMC

After an amazing and never-to-be-forgotten 9/11 weekend in DeGonia Springs, volunteers and funding are still desperately needed to rebuild the Baker Chapel United Methodist Church building. Immediate needs this week are experienced roofers. With the outer walls going up within 3 ½ hours on Friday, September 8, and by Sunday about a dozen trusses were up, deckers and roofers are needed now – ahead of schedule! If you are an experienced roofer, please contact Elsie Miller at the South Indiana Conference Center emiller@sicumc.org or toll-free 800-919-8160.

There also is a need for someone to volunteer landscaping expertise. There are many trees that were to be planted this past weekend but were not planted due to the heat. The members of Baker Chapel would like planting advice and help designing a prayer garden where their former church building use to sit. If you have a background in this area and would like to volunteer your services, please contact Elsie.

Updates and volunteer registration forms may be found at the Indiana Area UMC Web site at www.inareaumc.org, and at the Baker Chapel UMC Web site at www.bakerchapel.org. Volunteers are being scheduled into April, 2007.

If you would like to help fund this project, please send your gifts to South Indiana Conference, PO Box 2267, Bloomington, IN 47402-2267, note on the memo line – Baker Chapel Rebuilding Fund. THANK YOU!

Karen Daudelin of Wesley United Methodist Church in Bloomington, IL is leading a 3rd medical mission trip to Nicaragua Feb. 16-24, 2007. They lost one of the team doctors due to a scheduling conflict and are especially interested in getting a pediatrician or family doctor to take that spot on the team. If interested, please contact Karen at kpdaudelin@verizon.net.

Haiti – March 6-20, 2007

Virginia Bell, leader, Detroit Conference. Every year a team of teachers goes to Jeremy, Haiti and teaches Vacation Bible School to the fifth graders! Can you imagine the anticipation of 3rd and 4th graders, knowing that soon it will be their turn? The team is also adding a medical component this year. Call or email Virginia for more information, 906-492-3203, vbell@lighthouse.net. Deadline soon…

Nicaragua, Cusmapa – February 1-12 AND August 13-23, 2007

Leaders Bob and Regina Elgin, West Ohio Conference. Their team helped build an education building at a school and taught Vacation Bible School and English as a second language. This was their third trip to Cusmapa. Contact the Elgins at relgin@cinci.rr.com or call 513-777-5660.

Lithuania – July 1-15, 2007.

Richard and Donna Fisher, leaders, Dakotas Conference. Since Lithuania’s entry into the European Union, they are hungry to learn English. In 2005, the first TeachUM team to Lithuania learned that helping Lithuanians practice English might be the most practical economic development tool we can offer. Out of their difficult and often tragic history, Lithuanian Christians have much to teach us, too! Donna can be reached by phoning 605-355-9532, or emailing dfisher@rapidnet.com. Sign up by October 1!

Volunteer Pastor Needed for English Language Congregation

In the central Mexico cities of Guanajuato and San Miguel, a number of North Americans have retired. The opportunity for outreach with an English language congregation, both to permanent English-speaking residents, as well as to a large number of tourists is a priority of the Central Conference of the Methodist Church of Mexico.

In Guanajuato, the church has a sanctuary in the city center where no one meets now. In San Miguel, the work is to start a congregation in a city where land has been purchased.

Needed is a firm faith in Christ and an understanding of the United Methodist connection, with a call to evangelization, flexibility and a willingness to be under ecclesial authority. Housing and a small stipend provided. Contact Lorna Jost, Individual Volunteer Consultant (ljost@brookings.net), for information on how to apply and visit the Individual Volunteer website (http://individualvolunteers.info).

Your Church Can Help Groups as They Rebuild Burned Fences in Dakotas

Hands Across the Dakotas, a loose-knit group of churches and traditional relief organizations, is planning to help various farmers and ranchers rebuild fences which were burned in this summer’s extensive prairie fires in North and South Dakota. Work teams are requested. The North Dakota contact for United Methodist Churches interested in helping is District Superintendent Debra Ball-Kilbourne in Jamestown. Her e-mail: neumc@daktel.com. Donations for materials and supplies will also be needed.

Teacher of English in Korea

There is an immediate and future need for English teachers in the Wesley Mission School in Sapko, Korea. Prospective volunteers should apply through the Individual Volunteer program of the GBGM (or the SEJ if you live in the SE). Successful applicants would be in the classroom 6 hours a day, five days a week. Pastor Byoung Han Jeong would prefer someone who could come for 6 months to a year, but will accept shorter term commitments at this time. There is a shared apartment with utilities, you can have lunch with the children, and there is a stipend of $500 / month for those who will stay longer term (this has been increased temporarily to $1500). Sapkyo is about a two hour or less wonderful train ride from downtown Seoul. It is SW of Seoul and located in the Chungcheong Namdo Province.

Contact Lorna Jost (ljost@brookings.net), Individual Volunteer Consultant , for information on how to apply and visit the Individual Volunteer website (http://individualvolunteers.info).

Bishop Mike Coyner invites all of us to join him in setting aside time to be directly involved in the mission work of our church – “Mondays for Mission.” If you need assistance in starting a mission program for your church, please contact the South Indiana Conference Center at 1-800-919-8160.
