Imagine Indiana affirms North Indiana Conference camp expansion campaign

The Imagine Indiana Planning team affirmed the $16-million capital development plan for its campsites during a Sept. 27 planning session at the Indiana Area office in Indianapolis.

In a statement released by Bishop Mike Coyner, the seven-member team said:

“As a part of its work to bring a plan for the creation of a new Indiana Conference for a vote at the 2007 Sessions of the North and South Indiana Conferences, the Imagine Indiana Planning Team has been receiving many questions about the North Conference effort to meet its identified $16 million in capital development needs for its current camping ministry sites. The Imagine Indiana Planning Team has discussed this issue and offers the following responses:

  • Camping and retreat ministries are an important and valuable part of the life of both North and South Indiana Conferences, through which countless persons have come to make discipleship commitments to Jesus and to respond to calls to ministry.
  • Any movement toward merger will build upon the strengths of both conferences, and camping is a strength which certainly will be a part of the future of United Methodism in Indiana.

Any action by either Annual Conference to move forward is affirmed by the Imagine Indiana Planning Team, and so the Team affirms the plans of the North Indiana Conference for the capital development of its camp sites, along with its plans for an endowment fund to care for the long-term upkeep of those sites. The fact that this capital development effort does not include any added debt means that it will strengthen an already strong asset for future ministry, whether that be in the North Indiana Conference alone or in a new Conference for Indiana.”

The Imagine Indiana Planning Team and the 14 Discernment groups will meet next Nov. 20 at the Indiana Area office in Indianapolis. Dr. Greg Jones, dean of the Duke Divinity School in Durham, N.C., will be the guest consultant for that meeting, helping the groups to theologize about their task.

Bishop says Holy Land Trip in February is a ‘Go’

After receiving a positive report from a delegation including two Hoosiers who recently conducted a safety inspection trip of Israel, Bishop Mike Coyner has determined that the previously planned trip the Holy Land with Educational Opportunities is a “Go.” The trip already has more than 130 participants registered, but many have been waiting for word about the safety of traveling to Israel in light of the recent unrest between Israel and Lebanon.

The Rev. Corrine Boruff of Noblesville and the Rev. James Gentry of Indianapolis reported: “Entering post-intifada Israel on Sept. 22 with a small group of Americans, we were apprehensive, anticipating travel to be limited and our daily schedules to be dictated by military movement. We found quite the contrary to be true. Nine of us with our guide and bus driver traveled freely and without security issues from the Dead Sea to the northern shores of the Sea of Galilee. The cities of Nazareth and Tiberius, which had received fire from the recent unrest, were included without any hesitation or safety concerns. We are planning to return to Israel in February 2007 with a tour group.”

Coyner said, “While no one can promise absolute safety anywhere in the world, including here in Indiana, it does appear that a trip to Israel in February of 2007 will carry no unusual concerns. Obviously every individual has to make her or his own decision about going on the trip, but Marsha and I plan to go and welcome interested United Methodists and friends to travel with us. A trip to the Holy Land is not a vacation or just a tourist trip; it is a spiritual pilgrimage, so I am glad to hear these reports that our trip can be accomplished as planned.”

People who are interested in joining Bishop Coyner on the trip are welcome to contact the Indiana Area Foundation at 317-924-1321 or contact Educational Opportunities directly to register for the Indiana Area trip that will be Feb. 12-22, 2007.
