Six TV specials highlight the holiday season
Introducing Jesus of Nazareth
Beginning December 3 on ABC-TV affiliates
Produced by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Pastor,
theologian and noted radio host Peter Marty traces where Jesus walked,
from Nazareth and Bethlehem to Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan
Valley, the Mount of Transfiguration, and finally to Jerusalem, in a
straightforward retelling of the gospel story told against breathtaking
scenes from the Holy Land.
Building on Faith: Making Poverty Housing History
Beginning December 10 on NBC-TV affiliates
This NCC ecumenical documentary, narrated by Linda Ellerbee,
addresses the challenge of providing affordable housing for all
families. Includes interviews with Habitat for Humanity CEO Jonathan
Reckford, former vice-presidential candidates John Edwards and Jack
Kemp, evangelical activist Jim Wallis, Disciples of Christ president
Sharon Watkins, Methodist Bishop Mel Talbert, Muslim leader Sayyid Syeed
and Jewish attorney Mark J. Pelavin.
Enter the Light of Life
Christmas Eve on the Hallmark Channel: 7-8
am ET.
Produced by Church of the Brethren. A colorful mix of scripture,
hymns, a sermon, and a variety of classic and contemporary Christmas
pieces performed by an array of musicians, including a college choir and
a children's choir, and instruments that include banjo, saxophone, and
steel drum. Woven into the service are themes of peace, justice,
simplicity, and welcome.
Joy to the World
Christmas Eve on the Hallmark Channel: 9-10
am ET.
Produced by Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This
multicultural Christmas celebration includes a joyful mix of music from
ELCA African American, Asian, American Indian, Arab and Middle Eastern,
and Latino congregations. The rich and diverse cultural blend begins
with a Santa Lucia celebration in the Swedish Lutheran tradition.
Love’s Pure Light
Christmas Eve on the Hallmark Channel: 10-11
am ET.
Produced by Seventh Day Adventist Church. Love’s Pure Light is a
drama that centers on Grandfather, played by Joe Campanella, who is
undergoing a difficult process to leave the past behind. The cast will
be joined by well-known actress Ruta Lee, who plays Grandfather's good
friend and neighbor. Seasonal music will be interspersed throughout the
program.
Vespers from Bethlehem, the Christmas City
Christmas Day on NBC-TV affiliates
Produced by The Moravian Church. Take a journey into the wonderful
world of Christmastime in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as Moravian College
presents its traditional Vespers at Central Moravian Church. Share in
the pageantry and grandeur as the Moravian Choir and the Women’s Chorus
perform a repertoire of sacred and spiritual songs from a wide variety
of cultures.
