Flood buckets needed

United Methodists respond to Midwest flooding

United Methodist Volunteers in Mission coordinators and Disaster Response Coordinators of the North Central Jurisdiction, which includes the Indiana Area, have issued these alerts and requests for assistance in light of the extensive flooding that has occurred in several nearby states.

EAST OHIO – The flooding of last week has hit some of the communities in the East Ohio Conference very hard. Much of the damage was to sites in the Mid Ohio District. June Slabach, a District Disaster Response Coordinator can field calls at 419-468-2738. Many churches have already responded with help. As of Monday, August 27, here are some needs:

  • Flood Buckets – see information below
  • Clothing that is sorted and sized
  • School Supplies for children
  • Disposable diapers are in GREAT Need!
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Furniture and Appliances (please call 419-347-8711 before taking furniture or appliances as there is little storage space).

Volunteers are needed. To volunteer call Shelby Help Line Ministries at 419-347-8711 or the Crawford County EMA at 419-562-6009.

Volunteers are needed to help in sorting donated clothes and to transport persons to the clothing distribution site. Work crews are needed to help “muck-out” many homes and businesses. Financial donations may be made directly to the Shelby Christian Outreach Flood Relief Fund that has been set-up at Citizens’ Bank and Richland Bank. Donations also may be sent through the East Ohio Conference to Fund #9200. Checks sent to the conference must be made payable to East Ohio Conference Fund #9200 and mailed to East Ohio Conference, PO Box 76019, Cleveland, OH 44101-4755.

OHIO — Volunteer Mud Out Teams for northwest Ohio will be needed shortly. Requirements for Volunteers include:

  • Volunteers between 16-18 years old must be supervised by an adult.
  • Each volunteer will want to make sure their tetanus is up-to-date

To schedule a volunteer team, please contact Doug Dowson and Bob Davis. They will coordinate teams through the larger Ohio VOAD group. This insures that teams will be sent to areas in need of work.

ILLINOIS – Illinois Great Rivers Conference. Straight-line winds with an intensity of an F-1 tornado hit the Galesburg area Thursday, Aug. 23. The storm cut a path from Kirkwood to Monmouth to Galesburg. No significant damage was reported to United Methodist parsonages or church buildings although Galesburg Faith UMC was inaccessible Friday morning, Aug. 24, due to downed power lines and blocked streets. About 200 homes were reported damaged in Kirkwood where the Red Cross is assessing damage today. Knox College's historic Old Main building had the southwest corner of its roof lifted off the building, causing bricks and cement to fall. Except for athletes, students have not returned for fall classes. The fast-moving storm hit Galesburg just after 1 p.m. Thursday, uprooting trees and bringing down branches and power lines with straight-line winds estimated at 60 to 80 mph. The storm started developing cells near the Mississippi River and gained intensity as it traveled at speeds of up to 70 mph as it passed through Warren County into Knox County and on to the Chicago area, all within about two hours. Jon Sims, pastor of Monmouth First UMC, is coordinating efforts in the Spoon River District. Call 309-734-9437, 309-734-6007, ajjjs4@frontiernet.net to lend assistance.

ILLINOIS – Northern Illinois Conference. The most damaging winds appeared to hit West Chicago, where a warehouse roof shook in violent wind gusts and collapsed as workers ran for a bathroom and others dived behind office cabinets. Forty people were hurt there, and seven were sent to area hospitals, none with serious injuries.

 George Bush, gbushdos@comcast.net

WISCONSIN – Recent rains have caused five counties to be under water with Red Cross and Salvation Army taking the lead. The VOAD is forming a response this week and will know more next week. Volunteers are being taken this weekend at Richland Center, Wisc. armory and either the Soldiers Grove or Gays Mills Fire Departments. A VOAD volunteer program will be set up next week. We are ordering 200 flood buckets from Midwest Mission Distribution Center to supplement Red Cross and Salvation Army inventories.

David Sharpe, desharpe@sbcglobal.net

DAKOTAS – Flooding has occurred in Hermosa, S.D., Black Hills region. We sent 150 flood buckets from Aberdeen to the Black Hills a couple days ago. The National Guard trucked them out there for us. They were left over buckets from the LDS (Mormon) Church, but not from the UMC.

 Paul BakerAUL, eumc@702com.net

IOWA – The Red Cross is providing cleaning kits to those that want them. Community college athletes are doing sandbagging in Fort Dodge.
