Imagine Indiana Design Team requests young leaders during first meeting with Bishop Coyner

By Daniel R. Gangler
director of communication

INDIANAPOLIS – The Imagine Indiana Implementation Team asked Bishop Mike Coyner to include young church leaders during the team’s first meeting on Friday, June 29 at the area office in Indianapolis.

The team was voted into existence by both Indiana North and Indiana South Conferences during their respective sessions earlier this month and named by Coyner last month.

The meeting, chaired by Coyner, brought together Cindy Reynolds, Warsaw District Superintendent; Judi Purvis, Vincennes District Superintendent; Jennifer Gallagher, South Indiana Conference treasurer; Brent Williams, North Indiana Conference treasurer; Jim Bushfield, South Indiana Conference connectional ministries director; Mark Gough, North Indiana Conference connectional ministries director; Adolf Hansen, retired South Indiana Conference clergy and consultant; Frank Beard, Kokomo District Superintendent; Kayc Mykranz, North Indiana Conference Lay Leader; and Ike Williams, South Indiana Conference Lay Leader (who was unable to attend this first meeting).

Area staff members include David V.W. Owen, executive assistant to the bishop; and Dan Gangler, Indiana Area director of communication.

Coyner reminded the team of its assignment to create a new conference that will meet for the first time in 2009, to request of the 2008 North Central Jurisdictional Conference meeting in Grand Rapids, Mich., permission to create a new conference in Indiana, to authorize Coyner to name an implementation team and to affirm principles for the new conference as recommended by the Imagine Indiana Planning Team.

Coyner said he believes, “We have the right people and positions in the conferences and area office to do the hard work of putting together a design.”

The Imagine Indiana Design Team’s final report will go to each of the two annual conferences next year for approval. According to Coyner, if amendments are made by either or both annual conference sessions to the team’s design, a special session of both annual conferences will be called to iron out the differences, similar to the conferencing committee process in state and federal government legislation.

During the discussion, the team changed its name to the Imagine Indiana Design Team. Members also felt a need to include younger church leaders in the process.

To this request, Coyner responded yesterday, “We need a second group of ‘Young Leaders’ who will be our ‘sounding board’ every step of the way, to make sure that our design will meet the needs of this younger generation of United Methodists. I plan to invite a group of about 20 to 30 younger leaders, including laity, female, ethnic, clergy, etc. to gather and to provide us with their response to our work along the way.”

This team of Young Leaders will be in addition to a feedback group that Williams and Mykranz will lead. A prayer team also will be established to continue the much needed discipline of prayer and discernment during the conference design process.

“For one thing, I anticipate that the Young Leaders group will meet much more often and perhaps at times even meet with our Design Team,” said Coyner.

To begin the interpretation of the design team’s work, Coyner has produced a short DVD to interpret the work of the team to Indiana’s 1,218 congregations. The DVD will be mailed to each congregation later this month.

Responses to the work of the design team and suggestions for the new conference design can be e-mailed to ImagineIndiana@inareaumc.org or sent to Imagine Indiana Design Team, 1100 W. 42nd Street, Suite 210, Indianapolis, IN 46208. All responses and suggestions will be reviewed by the design team.

The team’s next meeting will be Thursday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Indiana Area Office. The two conferences’ connectional ministries directors and treasurers will meet at 9 a.m. to discuss the office needs of a new conference.

Coyner also has placed on his calendar 18 district meetings to listen and discuss the new Indiana Conference with clergy and interested laity. Here is a listing of those meeting dates. Time and place will be announced in each district. For the latest in the Imagine Indiana Design Team, log on to www.inareaumc.org.

MOVIE REVIEW

RATATOUILLE

  • Rating: G Studio: Pixar Animation Studios
  • Directed By: Brad Bird
  • Cast: Brad Garrett, Patton Oswalt, Lou Romano
  • Running Time: 110 minutes
  • Genre: Family and Kids

A Common Sense Review

At this point, it's pretty much a given that families and young children will line up to see anything made by Pixar, which seems incapable of producing a dud. But RATATOUILLE, like director Brad Bird's family adventure The Incredibles, is the rare animated film that could just as easily captivate an audience full of childless adults.

Granted, the world of haute French cuisine is an unlikely setting for a kid-friendly flick, but Bird makes it irresistible. Remy (voiced by comedian Patton Oswalt) is a unique rat who can't stomach eating garbage. He wants the good stuff – like truffle oil and fine artisan cheeses – which brands him the snobby black sheep of his crew.

Kids may ultimately favor the child-centric appeal of Toy Story or the vroom-vroom adventure of Cars, but grown ups will find a reason to ask for seconds of Ratatouille. Fans of this movie will also enjoy the Anatole books.
