Six days before Passover Jesus went back to
Bethany, where he had raised Lazarus from death. A meal had been prepared for
Jesus. Martha was doing the serving, and Lazarus himself was there.
Mary took a very expensive bottle of perfume and
poured it on Jesus’ feet. She wiped them with her hair, and the sweet smell of
the perfume filled the house. A disciple named Judas Iscariot was there. He was
the one who was going to betray Jesus, and he asked, “Why wasn’t this perfume
sold for three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor?” Judas did
not really care about the poor. He asked this because he carried the moneybag
and sometimes would steal from it. Jesus replied, “Leave her alone! She has kept
this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor with you,
but you won’t always have me.”

SLOT MACHINE BILL ADVANCES TO SENATE FLOOR
The Indiana State Senate Tax and Policy Committee
advanced the slot machine at horse race tracks bill to the floor of the Senate
by a 9-3 vote on Tuesday, March 20. Committee chair Senator Luke Kenley of
Noblesville and an active member of First UMC in Noblesville voted against the
bill as did Senators Gary Dillon of Pierceton and David Ford of Hartford City.
In its amended version, the bill proposes 1,500 rather than 2,500 slot machines
at each of the states two horse race tracks at Anderson and Shelbyville. Also
the franchise fee for each racino was raised from $100 million to $400 million.
The number of racing days was lowered from 160 to 140 days. Dan Gangler,
director of communication for the Indiana Area UMC, testified against the bill
on behalf of the Indiana Coalition Against Legalized Gambling. The bill now
waits for a second reading on the Senate floor. United Methodists are encouraged
to call or write to their State Senators to oppose this legislation which is
favored to be passed. A Senate Director is available on line by logging into
www.in.gov/legislative and clicking
on “Who’s my Legislator” or call your senator toll-free at 800-382-9467 or
317-232-9400.
BISHOP TO LEAD CHURCH EXECUTIVES IN MEETING WITH
GOVERNOR
Indiana Area Bishop Mike Coyner and five other
Indiana church executives are scheduled to meet with Governor Mitch Daniels on
Monday morning, March 26. Accompanying Bishop Coyner will be the Rev. Dr. Robert
C. Anderson, Interim Executive Presbyter, Presbytery of Whitewater Valley,
Presbyterian Church USA; the Rev. Stephen C. Gray, conference minister of the
Indiana-Kentucky Region of the United Church of Christ, Dr. Larry D. Mason,
executive minister of the American Baptist Church of Indiana and Kentucky; the
Rev. Richard Spleth, regional minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ) in Indiana and the Bishop James R. Stuck, Indiana-Kentucky Synod,
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. During their 30-minute meeting, the
church leaders will make the expansion of legalized gambling in Indiana their
top priority. Other issues will be discussed.
SUDAN DIVESTMENT BILL STUCK IN SENATE COMMITTEE
United Methodist activists Beth Reilly of
Aldersgate UMC in Fort Wayne and the Rev. Darren Cushman Wood of Speedway UMC
are working with an interfaith coalition of Protestants, Roman Catholics and
Jews to get HB1484, the Sudan Divestment bill, out of the State Senate Pension
and Labor Committee and on to the floor. The bill was first heard in hearing on
March 14 and then again for amendments of March 21. Committee chair Senator
Dennis Kruse of Auburn has now extended the hearing of this bill for additional
amendments and a vote on March 28 at 9 a.m. The two state pension funds continue
to review this limited plan to divest funds from Sudan that would directly
support any military activity against Darfurian people. Your support is needed.
Please call Senator Kruse at 317-232-9443 or toll-free 800-382-9467 or e-mail
him at s14@in.gov and let him know you support
the Sudan Divestment bill and do not want Indiana funds supporting genocide in
Darfur.
INDIANA WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR PASSING 15
SMOKE-FREE LAWS
In 2006, 15 Hoosier cities and counties enacted
smoke-free workplace laws, making Indiana a national leader in protection from
secondhand smoke in the workplace. Indiana health groups are receiving a
national award for their leadership.
“We are proud to present Indiana with the ANR
Smoke-free Indoor Air Challenge Award for its success in protecting the right to
breathe smoke-free air in the workplace in a growing number of cities,” said
Cynthia Hallett, executive director, Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights (ANR).
“It’s a classic grassroots movement here in
Indiana,” said Karla Sneegas, executive director, Indiana Tobacco Prevention
Cessation (ITPC). “Our local policymakers are leading the way by cutting across
party lines to make smoke free air and worker’s health a priority. We’ve moved
beyond traditional partnerships to work together with faith and business leaders
and so many other groups and individuals who support the issue of having a
healthier community and a healthier workforce.”
In 2006, a total of 143 cities and counties
enacted strong local smoke-free workplace laws within 26 states. This is more
than double the amount of local smoke-free laws passed just two years earlier,
with 64 laws enacted in 2004. Indiana more than doubled the number of local
smoke-free laws passed in 2006. A total of 6 strong laws passed in 2005 compared
to 15 this past year.

NEW BOOK
EXPLORES MISSION AND MUSIC
The centrality of song to Christian life and
mission is the subject of a collection of essays just published by The United
Methodist General Board of Global Ministries.
Music & Mission: Toward a Theology and Practice of
Global Song was edited by the Rev. Dr. S.T. Kimbrough, Jr., who recently retired
as the executive in charge of the Global Praise program of the mission agency.
The 14 essays put special emphasis on the strong
role of music found in the Methodist heritage, but they also explores song in
Scripture and in the broad Christian experience. The easy-to-read resource is
designed in part to help congregations take advantage of the wealth of song
available in a global church.
Music and Mission sells for $14.95 and can be
ordered through regular United Methodist distribution channels. Place mail
orders with Cokesbury, P.O. Box 801, Nashville, TN 27202-0801; telephone: 800

By Gregg Tubbs
(UMC.org) – Jesus was called many things during
his time on earth, but none more often than "teacher." His disciples and others
would often implore him, "Teacher … explain to us … show us … tell us what we
must do." Jesus would share with them life's lessons infused with divine wisdom
– lessons that still guide us today. The Ultimate Gift is a new film that
carries on the tradition of passing on the wisdom of the ages to a generation
sorely in need of guidance. The film follows a wealthy, callow youth on a
journey of spiritual and emotional discovery to uncover one of life's ultimate
questions, "What is the relationship between wealth and happiness?" The lessons
he learns along the way are sometimes hard, often complex, and always
unexpected, but they all add up to the ultimate gift.
Based on the uplifting bestseller by Jim Stovall,
The Ultimate Gift tells the story of a man whose final act is to share his
legacy with his family, passing on a lifetime of wisdom to those left behind and
striving to finally right old wrongs.
