My sheep know my voice, and I know them. They
follow me, and I give them eternal life, so that they will never be lost. No one
can snatch them out of my hand. My Father gave them to me, and he is greater
than all others. No one can snatch them from his hands, and I am one with the
Father.

SOUTH INDIANA CONFERENCE LAUNCHES REDESIGNED WEB
SITE
The South Indiana United Methodist Conference
launched a redesigned Web site on Sunday, April 22 with a new look and more
information than the previous site. The new design sports a compact home page
welcoming visitors and provides several options for navigating.
Visitors to the site at
www.sicumc.org will find scores of pages and
discover links to more than 200 documents describing ministries, explaining
policies, supplying applications and providing forms.
The site was designed to serve as a communication
channel and a place congregations can go for information about ministry that
also provides connections for ministry beyond congregations. The South Indiana
Conference Web site continues to serve as a highway to a variety of resources of
the annual conference and includes links to separate sites for the Media Center,
Outdoor Ministries and Youth. As a part of our United Methodist connection, the
site also offers links to the conference’s nine districts, the Indiana Area
office in Indianapolis and the general agencies of the denomination.
Sunday’s launch completes a two-year redesign
process. The Web site was released in time to circulate the South Indiana Annual
Conference session materials. The Conference Calendar feature continues to be
under renovation and will be completed at a later time.
UINDY VOLUNTEERS PREPARE FOR THREE-WEEK SERVICE
TRIP TO LIBERIA
The end of the school year signals the start of
summer – a time when many students look forward to part-time jobs, family
vacations and a break from school. But at the end of this school year, six
students, three faculty/staff members and one community member will be packing
their bags and heading to Liberia for a three week service trip as part of a
spring term course at the University of Indianapolis.
The group, led by Charles Guthrie, associate
professor of history and political science at UIndy, will travel to the rural
town of Kpain in eastern Liberia from May 22 to June 14 to build a school in the
country ravaged by a violent 13-year civil war. In preparation for the group’s
arrival, community members and students who will attend the school to be built
have already begun making bricks for the structure.
The project has been organized in collaboration
with Operation Classroom of the United Methodist Church and will be hosted by
the UMC in Liberia. The west African nation has been in the rebuilding process
for two to three years, but still has a long way to go.
YOU CAN HELP UINDY SERVICE PROJECT
The group would like to take as many supplies as
possible with they so that the school, once finished, can begin its work. Here
are the supplies needed:
-
BOOKS (Lots of books. They have nothing for a
library. Think about the same kinds of books you might want for your own
Primary and Middle School library. Aim for story books of general interest,
plus biographies and history and science and math. Aim for cultural and
racial sensitivity.)
-
Pens and Pencils (or pen and pencil sets, with
the ruler and stuff)
-
Crayons
-
Writing Paper
-
Teacher’s Books (Workbooks with ideas for
teaching the basic 3Rs)
-
Maps (especially laminated ones that will
last, maybe a few small wall size plus the 8 1/2 X 11 kind, world plus
Africa, NOT U.S.!)
-
Laminated 8 1/2 x 11 “information sheets” (for
English, Math, Science, etc.)
-
Soccer balls (and pumps & needles)
PLEASE SEND SUPPLIES TO:
Charles Guthrie, Department of History and
Political Science University of Indianapolis 1400 E. Hanna Ave., Indianapolis,
IN 46227. For more information, call 317-788-3335.

VISION FOR UMC INCLUDES 650 NEW CONGREGATIONS BY
2012
The vision for The United Methodist Church in the
21st century includes starting 650 new U.S. congregations by 2012, doubling the
number of young people serving as pastors and church leaders, and expanding
ministries in behalf of the world’s impoverished people. Those were among the
highlights from a first-ever teleconference inviting United Methodists worldwide
to an April 17 “town hall” meeting with denominational leaders to talk about the
church’s membership, ministries, missions and challenges for the future. The
teleconference was timed with the release of a report by the United Methodist
General Council on Finance and Administration, presenting and analyzing local
church data about membership, attendance and giving trends. Called “This is Our
Story,” the report presents The United Methodist Church as “a faithful, generous
people in dozens of nations who continue to make a difference in the lives of
people around the world,” said Sandra Lackore, the council’s chief executive. –UMNS
VIRGINIA TECH WESLEY FOUNDATION BECAME HAVEN FOR
STUDENTS
The Wesley Foundation of Virginia Tech University
became a safe haven for students immediately after a deadly shooting spree --
and a spiritual hub for grief and prayer as the campus community began to come
to grips with the tragedy. “It has been helpful to come here and talk about this
together. It is starting to set in how real this is,” said Amanda Rader, a
senior civil engineering major. Rader, a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist
Church in Newport, Va., lost a friend in the April 16 shooting. The Rev. Glenn
Tyndall, United Methodist campus minister, opened the doors to the Wesley
Foundation Center in Blacksburg, Va., immediately after the shootings so
students would have a “warm, comfortable, safe” place. They shared a prayer
service, and about a dozen spent the night in the building on the first night
after the shootings. None of the students who attend the Wesley Foundation was
hurt, but a handful lost close friends. –UMNS

“The Queen’s Prayer” (“O Kou Aloha No”), by Queen
Liliuokalani
During March of 1895, with the backing of the
United States government, US business interests in Hawaii illegally overthrew
the monarchy there. During her imprisonment, Queen Liliuokalani wrote this
prayer on March 22, 1895, and soon set it to this melody. At the bottom of her
manuscript, the queen wrote, “Composed during my imprisonment at ‘Iolani Palace
by the Missionary party who overthrew my government.’ “ In this prayer hymn, the
queen tells of her great love for God, a love great enough to ask for the
forgiveness of those who imprisoned her. In Hawaii today, this hymn is sung
expressively with great reverence and devotion.
