All of you are God's children because of your
faith in Christ Jesus. And when you were baptized, it was as though you had put
on Christ in the same way you put on new clothes. Faith in Christ Jesus is what
makes each of you equal with each other, whether you are a Jew or a Greek, a
slave or a free person, a man or a woman.

CHRISTIAN, MUSLIM RELIEF GROUPS FORM GLOBAL AID
PARTNERSHIP
U.S.-based United Methodist Committee on Relief
(UMCOR) and UK-based Muslim Aid will sign a partnership agreement next Tuesday,
June 26, in London that could result in approximately $15 million in direct
relief to disaster, war and conflict-ridden areas of the world, including Sri
Lanka and Indonesia. This is in addition to $9.8 million already applied in Sri
Lanka, all totalling $25 million. This inter-religious partnership will mean
maximum response to global disasters, enhanced economic and social development,
and, UMCOR hopes, a new peace building model based on cross cultural
understanding.
UMCOR, part of the global United Methodist Church,
is active in more than 80 countries. Since 2004, The United Methodist Church
have donated more than $170 million to alleviate human suffering caused by war,
poverty, conflict, and natural disasters. Muslim Aid’s influence is felt across
50 of the world’s poorest countries. These two charitable powerhouses have
already proven that theirs will be a harmonious and crucial alliance. – UMCOR

INDIANAPOLIS AIRPORT TO GO SMOKE-FREE JAN. 1,
2008
The Indiana State Health Commissioner joined
officials from Indiana Tobacco Prevention Cessation (ITPC) this week in
congratulating the Indianapolis Airport Authority for its adoption of a
municipal ordinance that will lead to a smoke-free environment for the
Indianapolis International Airport, its grounds and six regional facilities.
“The airport board is to be applauded for its
commitment to clear the air and adopt this comprehensive ordinance. This action
is a great example of Indiana employers joining with others to move our state
into a new, healthier direction,” said Indiana State Health Commissioner Judy
Monroe, MD.
The airport’s board decision was unanimous in a
move that will make the facilities and grounds smoke-free on Jan. 1, 2008. This
action marks the 33rd time that a municipality in Indiana has adopted a
smoke-free ordinance that protects workers from secondhand smoke.

NCC, UMC LEADERS PRESS FOR UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE
COVERAGE
The National Council of Churches is among more
than 20 faith groups pressing for health insurance coverage for many of the nine
million uninsured children in America. Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, Episcopal,
Evangelical and Orthodox leaders sent a letter on June 7 to Senator Max Baucus,
chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid,
urging them to produce the $50 billion needed in legislation to expand the
successful State Children's Health Insurance Program. The letter-whose signers
included James Winkler, United Methodist Board of Church and Society, and M.
Garlinda Burton, United Methodist Commission on the Status and Role of
Women-asks Baucus and Reid to keep their commitment to spend that sum over five
years to cover as many as 6 million uninsured children. –UMNS

CHAPLAIN OFFERS SERVICES FOR RETURNING, DEPLOYING
MILITARY
Duty places a heavy burden on military service
members, and they need to feel their faith community shares that burden with
them, says a Navy chaplain who has served in Iraq. The needs of service members
leaving for and returning from Iraq and Afghanistan is the focus of a task force
formed by the United Methodist boards of Church and Society and Higher Education
and Ministry. As part of that effort, the Rev. Laura J. Bender, a Navy chaplain,
has written two liturgies for congregations to use in services: "An Order for
Welcoming Service Members Returning from War" (www.gbhem.org/chaplains/mltchapguideItem.asp?item_id=80)
and "An Order for Blessing Service Members Deploying for War" (www.gbhem.org/chaplains/mltchapguideItem.asp?item_id=79).

By Gregg Tubbs
(UMC.org) — There’s an old Hollywood line that
says Ginger Rogers could do everything Fred Astaire did, but she had to do it
backwards and in high heels. That’s the spirit that infuses Gracie, an endearing
and uplifting family drama about overcoming the perception that if you are a
girl, there are things you just can’t do, places you can’t go and things you
can’t say. As Gracie fights an uphill battle to make the boy’s soccer team, we
also see something rare in today’s cinema: a portrait of a real, believable
working class family. For complete review, log on to
