A man from Samaria then came traveling along that road. When he saw the man,
he felt sorry for him and went over to him. He treated his wounds with olive oil
and wine and bandaged them. Then he put him on his own donkey and took him to an
inn, where he took care of him. The next morning he gave the innkeeper two
silver coins and said, “Please take care of the man. If you spend more than this
on him, I will pay you when I return.” Then Jesus asked, “Which one of these
three people was a real neighbor to the man who was beaten up by robbers?”
The teacher answered, “The one who showed pity.”
Jesus said, “Go and do the same!”

STOCKWELL UM CHURCH BUILDING COLLAPSES, NO ONE HURT
The Stockwell United Methodist church building that has stood in the center
of Stockwell, Ind. since 1864 collapsed into a pile of bricks, roof shingles,
guttering, insulation and stained glass Wednesday afternoon.
Assistant pastor Mark Miller said the collapse, which took place at 1 p.m.,
wasn’t totally unexpected. No one was injured. “We had lost part of the ceiling.
We knew there was a problem up there, but we didn’t know how serious it was
until an engineer looked at it (Tuesday).
The 4,400-square-foot sanctuary, built by the congregation 143 years ago, sat
between the front of the church and an office building that was constructed in
1959. For the past two weeks services for the 210-member congregation have been
held at the adjacent Family Life Center.
Pews and the organ and piano were removed from the sanctuary Tuesday evening,
and a chain-link barrier fence was erected around the building. No damage
estimate was available Wednesday. The church’s insurance company sent an
inspector to view the building after being alerted to the problem with the
ceiling. He arrived 30 minutes after the collapse occurred. – Lafayette Journal

RETIRED BISHOP BEN OLIPHINT DIES IN HOUSTON AT 83
Bishop Benjamin Ray Oliphint, who had an impact on The United Methodist
Church at many levels, died July 7, 2007, at Methodist Hospital in Houston. He
was 83.
The bishop had experienced a cardiac episode recently and undergone an
angioplasty procedure. He seemed to be doing well, but had a setback and did not
recover, according to the Council of Bishops office in Washington.
Elected bishop in 1980, Oliphint led United Methodists in the denomination’s
Houston, Kansas and Louisiana areas during the following 12 years. He was
instrumental in helping start Africa University, the United Methodist-related
school in Zimbabwe.
Oliphint was president of the board from 1988 to 1992, during which Africa
University was launched near Mutare, Zimbabwe. Ground was broken for the school
in 1991, and the first students were admitted the next year.
Elected bishop in 1980, Oliphint was assigned to the Kansas Area, where he
served four years. He led the Houston Area from 1984 until his retirement in
1992. He also served as interim bishop of the Louisiana Area from 1987 to 1988.
After retiring from the episcopacy in 1992, he served for 10 years as
president of the Texas United Methodist College Association.
Graveside services were held July 10 at Greenwood Cemetery in Pineville, La.
A memorial service was held July 11 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in

JEFFERSONVILLE LEADERS URGE CONGRESS TO SUPPORT FDA LEGISLATION
Southern Indiana and statewide health, faith and community leaders are urging
Indiana Congressman Baron Hill (D-9th) and Congress to endorse legislation
giving the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authority over tobacco products.
The legislation being proposed includes allowing the FDA to crack down on
tobacco marketing and sales to kids. Former Indiana State Health Commissioner,
Dr. Richard Feldman, said, “The tobacco industry spends $425 million a year
marketing its products in Indiana and it costs Hoosiers more than $2 billion per
year. Until Representative Hill and the entire Congressional delegation grant
the FDA authority over tobacco, the tobacco industry will continue to market to
our children.” Also lending his support at the July 2 news conference held at
the Clark Memorial Hospital was the Rev. Gil Hubbard of the Wall Street UMC. –InsideINdianaBusinesS.com

SIX-WEEK STUDY EXPLORING WOMEN IN MINISTRY AVAILABLE THIS MONTH
A six-week study exploring United Methodist women in ministry will be
available in July and is designed primarily for use by local congregations.
“Women in the Ministry” is published by the United Methodist Commission on the
Status and Role of Women and co-sponsored by the church-wide Board of Higher
Education and Ministry. The study will be posted at
www.gcsrw.org. The study is a follow-up to
last year’s 50th anniversary of the ordination of women in The United Methodist
Church. Burton said it is a tool for reclaiming the “lost history” of women

VOLUNTEERS RESPONDING TO RAIN-SOAKED CENTRAL UNITED STATES
United Methodists are responding to flooding that has plagued the rain-soaked
central United States from mid-June through early July. In Texas, where several
churches have served as Red Cross shelters for storm victims, volunteers are
assisting with cleanup. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has sent an
emergency grant to the denomination’s North Texas Conference and dispatched a
consultant there in early July. UMCOR emergency grants range from $5,000 to
$10,000. Flood buckets also have been sent. The agency is encouraging donations
to its general domestic disaster response fund, UMCOR Advance No. 901670, to
assist with recovery. “We’ve had a lot of these springtime storms this year, and
we haven’t had a lot of income to those accounts,” said the Rev. Tom Hazelwood,
UMCOR’s domestic disaster coordinator. – UMNS
UMCOR CONSTRUCTED SCHOOL IN BANDA ACEH DEDICATED JUNE 30
One of the largest primary schools built since the 2004 tsunami was dedicated
June 30 in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Using United Methodist donations to the South
Asia Advance, the United Methodist Committee on Relief constructed the
state-of-the-art, two-story building that is both earthquake- and
flood-resistant, and furnished it with school kits for students and school
equipment, educational materials and sports and playground equipment. The
facility replaces four schools destroyed or damaged when the tsunami’s waters
overwhelmed the community. Local officials praised the new school, named Sekolah
Dasar Negeri 3, which includes classrooms and offices for some 540 students and
31 teachers. – UMNS

NEW CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL CURRICULUM A HIT
Children across the United States are leaving church on Sunday mornings with
these words ringing in their ears: “God is a great big God.” They also are
talking about Bongo, Mr. Z and Ms. Lucy, “The Station” and “Common Ground Café.”
Along the way, they are developing lifelong faith and a love for Sunday school.
That was the dream behind “Live B.I.G.” when the United Methodist Publishing
House last year produced the first year’s Sunday school curriculum for children
ages 3-13. One year later, there is evidence that the dream is coming true. In
the first seven months of production, sales were up to $2.4 million, and 4,575
churches had bought the new curriculum. In a survey of first-time users,
respondents said the DVD was helpful and that more children were attending
Sunday school. For more information, log on to

Ratatouille
- Rating: G Studio: Pixar Animation Studios
- Directed By: Brad Bird
- Cast: Brad Garrett, Patton Oswalt, Lou Romano
- Running Time: 110 minutes
- Genre: Family and Kids
A Common Sense Review (www.commonsensemedia.org)
Reviewed By: Sandie Angulo Chen
At this point, it’s pretty much a given that families and young children will
line up to see anything made by Pixar, which seems incapable of producing a dud.
But RATATOUILLE, like director Brad Bird‘s family adventure The Incredibles, is
the rare animated film that could just as easily captivate an audience full of
childless adults.
Granted, the world of haute French cuisine is an unlikely setting for a
kid-friendly flick, but Bird makes it irresistible. Remy (voiced by comedian
Patton Oswalt) is a unique rat who can’t stomach eating garbage. He wants the
good stuff – like truffle oil and fine artisan cheeses – which brands him the
snobby black sheep of his crew.
Kids may ultimately favor the child-centric appeal of Toy Story or the
vroom-vroom adventure of Cars, but grown ups will find a reason to ask for
seconds of Ratatouille. Fans of this movie will also enjoy the Anatole books.
