So I (Jesus) tell you to ask and you will receive,
search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you. Everyone
who asks will receive, everyone who searches will find, and the door will be
opened for everyone who knocks. Which one of you fathers would give your hungry
child a snake if the child asked for a fish? Which one of you would give your
child a scorpion if the child asked for an egg? As bad as you are, you still
know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even
more ready to give the Holy Spirit to anyone who asks.
– Luke 11:9-13

VATICAN’S STANCE ‘NOTHING NEW,’ SAY CHURCH
LEADERS
A recent Vatican statement should not
significantly affect relations between United Methodists and Roman Catholics,
according to United Methodist officials. Noting that the two Christian churches
have been in dialogue for more than 40 years and “have reached clarity on
several major theological issues,” the United Methodist Council of Bishops said
it found “nothing new or radically different” in the document and added that
“all the positives remain in our relationship.”
The Vatican statement, titled “Responses to Some
Questions Regarding Certain Aspects of the Doctrine of the Church,” came from
the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and was ratified and confirmed by
Pope Benedict XVI on June 29 and released on July 10. It reasserts the position
that only Catholics constitute the true church, while Protestants are merely
“Christian communities” and not churches “in the proper sense.”
The United Methodist Council of Bishops, in a
response released on July 18, said United Methodists affirm “the one true
Church, Apostolic and Universal.”
“We believe that apostolicity is based on the
faithfulness of the Church through the ages rather than on historical
succession,” the bishops wrote. -- UMNS

INDY CHURCH NOTED FOR JOINING ‘GREEN’ MOMENTUM
Many Faith congregations are joining the “green”
momentum. For example, the Broadway UMC in Indianapolis has a paper recycling
bin on its parking lot and recently reported 17,567 tons of paper recycled, five
cubic yards of landfill space saved, and 61,653 KWH of energy saved. Broadway
UMC also has changed many of its light bulbs and is currently using “green
cleaning” products.

FORT WAYNE CHOIR SINGS AT THE VATICAN DURING JUNE
16 MASS
The Sanctuary and Handbell Choirs of First Wayne
Street UMC in Fort Wayne enjoyed a two-week concert tour this summer through
Italy and Austria with concerts in some of Europe’s famous cathedrals. The
choirs are under the direction of Dale Tucker, who also has served as the
Northern Indiana Conference organist and pianist for the past two annual
conference sessions. This was Tucker’s ninth concert tour and his second with

GLOBAL GATHERING DRAWS 6,200 UNITED METHODIST
YOUTH
More than 6,200 youth and youth leaders from four
continents attended the July 11-15 UM Youth 2007 event which was designed to
build disciples by encouraging young people to live out their faith in ways they
never thought possible. The worldwide youth gathering happens once every four
years for UM teens ages 12-18. This year’s theme was “SPLAT,” which stands for
“Seek, Pray, Learn, Act, Teach.”
The Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum served as the hub
for activities that included speakers, worship services, workshops, concerts,
contests and recreation. Youth also participated in local mission projects,
including a Society of St. Andrew “potato drop” in which they bagged 40,000
pounds of potatoes for distribution to hungry people.

ELKHART MAY BE NEXT CITY TO BAN SMOKING IN PUBLIC
PLACES
Another Hoosier city may stop smokers from
lighting up inside restaurants and businesses. The city of Elkhart is proposing
a smoking ban that would prohibit smoking in enclosed public places, except for
bars and private clubs. Some people fully support the ban while others say it
will impact business and should be an individual decision for business owners to
make. Many people start their morning at Main Street Cafe with eggs, coffee and
cigarettes. “If I want to smoke, I’ll go to a smoking place,” said Charles
Landis, an ex-smoker who says the cigarette smoke doesn’t ruin his appetite.) To
date 33 Indiana local governments have banned smoking in most public places,
including the Indianapolis International Airport.) – WSBT Channel 22 (South
Bend, IN), 2007-07-17
SURVIVING THE PRELUDE
As worship leaders, we choose the hymns to be
sung, the choir anthems to be presented and the organ music to be played in
worship. Our best thought and preparation go into the selecting, rehearsing,
directing and final offering of that music. Despite our efforts, the music may
be received quite differently than we intend it to be heard and understood. Any
piece of music heard in worship is heard in at least three different ways, with
varying consequences. Understanding the dynamic that exists between musician and
worshipper may make for better music making AND worship. Click on to this URL
