SIX HOOSIER CLERGY LEAVE TODAY TO
TEACH 60 UGANDANS
Six Indiana United Methodist clergy
will fly today to Uganda to conduct the second annual Uganda United Methodist
Bible Academy for two weeks. Pastors going to Uganda include: James Hertel,
Greenwood Mt. Auburn; Bob Coleman, Franklin Grace; Byron Fritz, Cicero; Carol
Fritz, Sheridan; Bob Land, Centerville; and Dewey Miller, Howe/Pretty Prairie.
Each team member will teach one
course for two weeks. Sixty Ugandan pastors will come from across Uganda to
Humble United Methodist School near Mukono, 15 miles east of Kampala, the
capital. The special feature of this year's academy will be the introduction of
daily testing and grading, which will enable Bishop Daniel Wandabula to begin
use of the Academy’s training to work toward ordination.
Each of the six clergy has prepared
course outlines and/or lectures that will be distributed to students. The team
will arrive back in Indianapolis on Monday night, Sept. 10.
BISHOP LISTENS TO YOUNG LEADERS
DISCUSS CHURCH’S FUTURE
A week ago today, Friday, Aug. 17,
Indiana United Methodist Bishop Mike Coyner and his executive assistant the Rev.
David V.W. Owen, listened to 11 youth and young adult leaders (both lay and
clergy, male and female, single and married) of the United Methodist Church as
they commented and discussed the Imagine Indiana plan to unite the two existing
conferences into one Indiana Conference. According to Coyner, “The group was
lively, gave us a lot of feedback, and talked at length about generational
issues that we need to hear. It was a good session.” Comments from the session
will be heard again this coming week on Tuesday, Aug. 28 as the 12-member
Imagine Indiana Design Team meets again at the Indiana Area office in
Indianapolis. Next month the team will get together on Sept. 28. Coyner will
continue to meet with the 15-member young leaders’ group as part of the Imagine
Indiana planning process.
HURRICANES 2005: 60,000 PEOPLE
HELPED AT TWO-YEAR MARK
Nearly 60,000 individuals have
received United Methodist assistance during long-term recovery efforts in the
Gulf Coast, according to a new report issued yesterday by the United Methodist
Committee on Relief.
“Serving the Least and the Lost”
summarizes United Methodist response up to June 30, 2007, to the unprecedented
wind and water damage from several large hurricanes in 2005 – Dennis, Katrina,
Rita, Stan and Wilma. “We’re at the two-year mark in our five-year plan of
long-term recovery work,” said the Rev. Sam W. Dixon, UMCOR interim executive.
Issued two years into the response,
and near the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the new report details the
disbursement of the funds and quantitative results of the assistance to families
and individuals in the Gulf Coast as well as international aid. In partnership
with Annual Conferences from Texas to Florida, UMCOR has supplied direct
assistance and established disaster organizations to assist with long term
recovery.
Some 25,000 total and partial
rebuilds have been done. The July 20 edition of USA Today, a national
publication, said UMCOR home improvement efforts outpaced any other agency
working in the Gulf Coast region. United Methodists represented the third
largest contingent of volunteer workers in the region, according to USA Today.
Rebuilding continues in the region, and disaster organizations will be actively
seeking volunteer teams for years to come. –UMCOR
SPECIAL HURRICANE KATRINA OFFERING
PLANNED FOR THIS SUNDAY
As the second anniversary of
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita approaches, the need continues for prayers,
volunteers, partners and donations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The
recovery stage has evolved into the rebuilding stage in most areas, though some
places in New Orleans have been untouched since Hurricane Katrina hit on Aug.
29, 2005.
United Methodist churches will
receive a special offering this Sunday, Aug. 26 (or other Sunday) for the
Katrina Church Recovery Appeal. Donations go directly to the rebuilding of
United Methodist churches, parsonages and other facilities as well as to
salaries for support staff; training for lay leadership; and efforts to grow
congregations where membership has declined.
New resources to help tell the
story of rebuilding and recovery are available at
http://www.umc.org/katrina.
UMCOR RESPONDS TO HURRICANE DEAN,
YOU CAN HELP
Jamaica and Mexico’s Yucatan
Peninsula took the direct hit from Hurricane Dean after it had lashed the
coastlines of Haiti, Belize and other Caribbean nations. The United Methodist
Committee on Relief is contacting the Methodist Church of the Caribbean and
Americas, the Methodist Church of Haiti and the Council of Bishops of the
Methodist Church in Mexico to determine how to best assist in each situation.
UMCOR provides assistance for long-term recovery that last months and sometimes
years after a major storm such as Hurricane Dean.
How You Can Help – Please pray for
those thousands who are affected by Hurricane Dean. Your gifts are imperative to
UMCOR’s response. Funds for UMCOR’s response to 2007 hurricanes are low as this
is the first major storm of the season. Please give generously to support
UMCOR’s work through Hurricanes 2007, UMCOR Advance #982511. To give online, log

TIPS FOR STARTING A HEALTH
MINISTRY
Starting a health ministry can be
as simple as cultivating a healthy environment at church to support positive
lifestyle choices, says the Rev. Pam Harris, M.D., a physician and United
Methodist clergywoman.
Find out what people want, present
it in a non-threatening way, make it fun and provide support, advises Harris,
associate medical director of Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care and
minister of health at Leawood (Kan.) UMC. She will be among the speakers at the
third annual National Congregational Health Ministries Conference Sept. 23-26 in
Wichita, Kan.

INSTANT KARMA: THE AMNESTY
INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO SAVE DARFUR
By Steve Morley
UMC.org – The notion of a John
Lennon tribute to spark awareness for human rights abuses in Darfur, Sudan is
one with its fair share of wrinkles. Lennon’s socially conscious songs were
often diminished by lyrics that were self-referencing, acerbic, indulgent, or
all the above. While the cause behind the album is undeniably worthy, the
double-disc set Instant Karma is a sprawling and uneven affair that can’t begin
to reconcile the contradictions in John Lennon’s solo work, much less sustain a
relevant statement about present-day atrocities.
