BIBLE PASSAGE FOR SUNDAY

When Jesus returned from the Jordan River, the power of the Holy Spirit was with him, and the Spirit led him into the desert. For forty days Jesus was tested by the devil, and during that time he went without eating. When it was all over, he was hungry. The devil said to Jesus, "If you are God's Son, tell this stone to turn into bread." Jesus answered, "The Scriptures say, `No one can live only on food.' "

MIRACLE SITTING ON HOLY GROUND IN DEGONIA SPRINGS

More than 439 volunteers have helped with the Baker Chapel UMC rebuild project since the deadly tornado of Nov. 6, 2005. Monetary donations for 2005/2006 have totaled over $151,000. Planned for TODAY, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. (Evansville Central Time) will be the placement of the steeple. The cross will be blessed before it is placed on top of the church; approximately 75 feet in the air.

Barbara Dillon, volunteer coordinator for Baker Chapel UMC rebuild project, sent the following message to the South Indiana Conference center, “We have a miracle sitting on Holy Ground in DeGonia Springs, Indiana. We give God all the praise and glory for how He Builds His Church and how He has sent His people to Baker Chapel from all over the USA. We are thankful for each person who has come to help us and for their touch that showed us Jesus over and over. We all realize God has big things for Baker Chapel to accomplish in 2007 and all kinds of opportunities to serve Him and touch others for Him. That will be our joy to go and pass it on. We thank each of you for all your help.

With the drywall and siding completed and the heating and air being finished by Franks, the building committee is currently re-working the building schedule. The next scheduled project is ceiling grids and ceiling tiles. Individuals or work teams interested in volunteering, please contact Elsie Miller at the South Indiana Conference Center at emiller@sicumc.org or 1-800-919-8160. Information and volunteer forms may be found at the Baker Chapel UMC Web site www.bakerchapel.org or the Indiana Area Web site www.inareaumc.org.

STATE OF EMERGENCY IN GUINEA STRANDS 45 UNITED METHODISTS

The state of emergency (martial law) declared in Guinea on Feb. 14 left a delegation of 45 United Methodists from that West African country stranded in neighboring Liberia.

The group had attended the174th annual conference of the United Methodist Church in Liberia. Guinea and Liberia are part of the same episcopal area.

The state of emergency declared by President Lansana Conte closed Guinea’s borders, even to returning citizens. Martial law was imposed in response to strike and protests against the Conte government.

As of Feb. 20, the 45 men and women were being temporarily housed in a dormitory at the United Methodist Mission at Ganta. The General Board of Global Ministries is awaiting further information on the plight of the 45 Guineans at Ganta. Leaders of the church in West Africa have requested the prayers as they deal with the situation. – GBGM

UMC IN SERBIA RECEIVES OFFICIAL RECOGNITION

The UMC is now legally registered in Serbia, meaning that it is entitled to full religious freedom and broad ministry opportunities. A Serbian law passed last year recognized a limited number of “traditional churches and religious communities” as having full rights. Other religious expressions, including the UMC, were required to register to qualify for tax exemption and the right, for example, to run schools, medical facilities, and prison ministries. The registration went into effect on Jan. 29, and the official documents were delivered on Feb. 5.

The 18 congregations in Serbia are part of the UMC in Southern and Central Europe.

The Serbia and Macedonia Conference is related to the General Board of Global Ministries through the In Mission Together Partners. This program builds links between congregations in the United States and Western Europe and congregations in designated areas, including Eastern Europe. Today Serbia and Macedonia are each districts of the single annual conference (Advance #15065A). — GBGM

YOUNG ADULTS TODAY REPORT LESS INTEREST IN CHURCH

The proportion of young people, ages 18 to 25, in the United States with no religious affiliation has doubled since the late 1980s. According to a report released last month from the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, one out of five young people claim no affiliation or are atheist or agnostic. These Millennials, or Generation Next as the report calls them, are also less likely to attend church than those who are older. Of Millennials, 32 percent attend services at least once a week, while 40 percent of those older than 25 attended at least weekly. Millennials also have more belief in evolution (63 percent) and are the most tolerant of immigration, different races, and gays and lesbians. According to the report, these young people also assert that the will of the people should affect U.S. laws more than the Bible. In reaching out to their peers, most Millennials go online and connect through social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, with approximately 40 percent creating a profile. They remain close to their parents, with about 80 percent talking to them within the last 24 hours. – UM NEWSCOPE

ABINGDON PRESS RECEIVES GRANT TO BROADEN BOOK’S REACH

Templeton Foundation Press, through its Publishing Subsidy Program, has awarded $10,000 to Abingdon Press to help broaden the reach of Can You Believe in God and Evolution?: A Guide for the Perplexed. The subsidy program seeks to support publishing projects that pursue research and discovery in the field of science and religion. (Abingdon Press is an imprint of The United Methodist Publishing House, publisher of Newscope.) Written by theologian Ted Peters and scientist Martinez Hewlett, the book explores issues of faith and science including creationism, intelligent design, and evolutionary theism, helping Christians connect their faith in God with a solid scientific understanding. A portion of this grant will support an event on March 4 featuring the authors at the UM Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City. Participants will have an opportunity to hear presentations by the authors and engage in informal dialogue. — UMPH

  • Production Company: Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media

  • Director: Gabor Csupo

  • Cast: Josh Hutcherson, AnnaSophia Robb, Zooey Deschanel, Robert Patrick

  • Rating: PG for thematic elements including bullying, some peril and mild language.

By Gregg Tubbs

(UMC.org) — In Bridge to Terabithia, two young outsiders use the power of imagination and their unique bond to create a world of their own, filled with fantastic creatures and free of bullies and the pressures and loneliness of the real world. But how can they, or any of us, fare as lords of our own creation? And can such a fantasy world really provide a refuge from the sorrows of the real world or will it simply reflect them in a different way? To find out, we need to follow them into Terabithia and rediscover the imagination and wonder of childhood.

The full review of this movie can be found at: www.umc.org/site/c.lwL4KnN1LtH/b.2513687/k.3F19/Movie_Review_iBridge_to_Terabithiai.htm
