“Two Nice Guys Finish First”
Sometimes nice guys finish first. That is what we saw yesterday in
the Super Bowl. Two fine Christian men, two excellent coaches, and the
first two African-Americans to coach in the Super Bowl. Obviously I am
pleased that the Colts won, but even more I am pleased about the witness
of Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy.
What a wonderful coincidence that this occurred during Black History
Month here in the US. During February as we remember and celebrate the
history, sacrifice, and leadership of African-Americans, it is fitting
to see those two coaches put on a classy show during all of the hype of
the Super Bowl. They kept their composure and witnessed to their faith
with an integrity which is seldom seen in professional sports.
In the midst of the shouting, cursing, cheating, grandstanding, and
attention-grabbing antics which too often have become the pattern of
sports events in America, how refreshing it was to see two nice guys,
two Christian guys, two excellent coaches finish first.
May we all learn from their example.
