Bishop requests UMCOR emergency funds in response to flooding

INDIANAPOLIS – Bishop Mike Coyner this afternoon requested $10,000 for emergency relief funds from the United Methodist Committee on Relief. The request was received by the Rev. Tom Hazelwood at UMCOR’s Emergency Services Offices in Washington, D.C. and, according to Hazelwood, will be processed on Monday, Jan. 14.

This request originated with Gary Peterson, the North Indiana Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, after viewing flooding in the Lafayette District especially in the Monticello, Remington, Buffalo and Delphi areas of northern Indiana.

Peterson has been in regular conversations with the Rev. Brian Beeks at Monticello and with the Rev. Todd Ladd at Delphi. In Monticello leaders have formed a Recovery Committee made up of all the governmental agencies as well as members of the faith community.

Petersons told Bishop Coyner, “Since this flooding spans across several counties, organized recovery maybe more of a challenge. There are whole clusters of homes and trailer parks that are already being declared total disasters. Like the tornado disaster in Nappanee, the recovery will take a long time.”

Peterson arranged for the delivery of 400 flood buckets from the Midwest Mission Distribution Center and another 125 from Evansville.

The Rev. Glenn Howell, superintendent of the Evansville District in the South Indiana Conference, reported the Rev. Randy Anderson, pastor of Centenary UMC in Evansville, placed the 125 flood buckets in a recently outfitted disaster response trailer and delivered the buckets to Delphi last night.

Howell said, “We learned through the tornados two years ago in Evansville that having supplies in place immediately following a disaster is very important to a prompt response.” He further said with funds remaining following the disaster response in Evansville, the district bought and equipped the disaster response trailer. It contains tools, equipment, a generator and other items needed for early response.

Brent Williams, treasurer of the North Indiana Conference, said in response to this recent flooding in northern Indiana, United Methodist congregations and members may send disaster response gifts to the North Indiana Conference, P.O. Box 869, Marion, IN 46952. Checks need to be marked for “Flood Relief in North Indiana Account 030401.”
