NEWS AND INFORMATION

BOTH INDIANA CABINETS MEET AT DEPAUW FOR WINTER RETREAT

The Annual Winter Retreat — So What Do We Do for Four Days?

The cabinets of both North Indiana and South Indiana conferences met in Greencastle this past January in their annual kick-off to the year’s work. Here is a sampling of their time together.

  • Bishop Coyner led them each day in worship and a lesson.

  • Each cabinet worked individually on the new appointment season considering answers to these questions: Who is retiring? What pastors are ready to move and why? What churches are ready for a new pastor and why? Do we have strategic churches and pastors we want to develop in the year ahead? Are there pastors coming back from leaves or extension ministry? How many openings will we have and how does that coordinate with the Board of Ordained Ministry and their work in approving new pastors?

  • Made mid-year appointment changes, when needed.

  • Reviewed and discussed their priorities for the coming year, and assigned tasks to each superintendent as needed.

  • Discussed and took actions on personnel issues related to our clergy.

  • Discerned and recommended to some of our churches that are unhealthy.

  • Much of their meeting between North and South Cabinets discussed common themes, cross conference appointments, finding common ground in how each cabinet and conference works (due to Imagine Indiana), and deepened their relationships with each other in light of their future together.

  • Discussed and developed procedures to deal with pastoral ineffectiveness.

  • Participated in an excellent presentation by the Rev. David V.W. Owen on the life cycle of churches.

  • Heard an in depth review of the Imagine Indiana Design Team recommendations from Adolf Hansen, Cindy Reynolds, David V.W. Owen, Brent Williams, Ike Williams, Frank Beard and Judi Purvis. The cabinets did a lot of “holy conferencing” on their roles as superintendent in the new conference, adding their opinions and input to the design team before the final recommendations are made.

  • Enjoyed a movie and popcorn evening together.

The district superintendents said they realize it is a privilege to serve God on the cabinets of our respective conferences, and ask for the prayers of all Hoosier United Methodists for the work they do.

MADISON CHURCH REACHES OUT TO PET LOVERS

Support groups for those grieving after the loss of a loved one or caring for an ailing family member, are not unusual. But recognizing the strong bond between people and their pets, members of North United Methodist Church in Madison, Ind., go a step further, reaching out to those dealing with the illness or death of four-legged friends.

“They need somebody to talk to,” says Bob Schultz, a church volunteer who started the Pet Caretakers’ Ministry. “They’re coming in and they want prayer for their pets. And they want prayer for themselves, taking care of them. “

Schultz came up with the idea for the ministry after seeing an upset pet owner at a local veterinary clinic. Soon after that meeting, the Pet Caretakers’ Ministry was launched, meeting once a month at the church. North United Methodist has also expanded its 24-hour prayer line 812-493-4487 to include prayers for pets and their owners.

“Sometimes we fail to be sensitive, I think, to individuals who are very, very, very attached to their pets and then they lose one of their pets,” says the Rev. Randy Jungkurth, pastor of the 140-member congregation. “And then that ends up being even as much grief as a person who loses a family member.”

Jungkurth welcomed the idea of the Pet Caretakers’ Ministry, which began as a community outreach in September 2007. – UMNS

UMCOR RESPONDS TO ‘SUPER TUESDAY’ TORNADOES IN SOUTH

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and its regional church partners are responding as rapidly as conditions allow to tornadoes that struck five southern states on Tuesday night, Feb. 5. Early response United Methodist teams were involved in debris cleanup on the afternoon of Feb. 7 in areas that were open to volunteer workers. “In some areas, seek and rescue operations are still the priorities,” said the Rev. Thomas Hazelwood, director of domestic disaster relief for UMCOR.

More than 65 people were known dead and scores were injured, primarily in Arkansas and Tennessee, the states hardest hit. There was also damage in Mississippi, southern Kentucky and northern Alabama on “Super Tuesday,” the day of many state presidential primaries.

Christy Smith of Brownsville, Tenn., is coordinating response to the early February tornadoes. She lives near Jackson, Tenn., one of the cities hardest hit and has experience in UMCOR efforts in previous tornado damage in the area.

Donations to assist with relief efforts in the wake of the early February tornadoes can be made to UMCOR in a variety of ways. Indicate Advance #901670 and “Super Tuesday Tornadoes.” Give online by going to www.givetomission.org and entering the Advance number, by phone using a credit card at 888-252-6174, or by check sent to Advance GCFA, P.O. Box 9068, GPO New York, NY 10087-9068. Contributions may be placed in the offering plate of any United Methodist congregation.

Homes that flooded along the Tippecanoe River last month, were flooded again last week. Once the water recedes, volunteers will be able to muck out houses. ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING’ OFFERING TO BE RECEIVED MARCH 2

The One Great Hour of Sharing offering is essential to UMCOR, gifts to this offering underwrite UMCOR’s “costs of doing business.” That helps us keep our promise that 100 percent of every other gift you make to a specific UMCOR project can be spent on that project-not on home office costs and assisting UMCOR programs that have not been fully funded through designated Advance gifts.

Recently the North Indiana Conference received $15,000 from UMCOR to fulfill the immediate needs of residents for storm relief in North Indiana. These funds were available, because congregations from across the country gave to the “One Great Hour of Sharing” offering last year, making 100 percent of these funds available to those in need.

Free offering envelopes and DVD’s are available for the One Great Hour of Sharing offering by calling toll-free 1-888-346-3862, by fax at 615-742-5499 or online at www.umcgiving.org/content/sundays/OGHS_nav/onegreat.asp. WEST MICHIGAN DELEGATIONS ENDORSE HALLER FOR BISHOP

The West Michigan Conference delegations to the 2008 United Methodist General and Jurisdictional conferences have endorsed the Rev. Laurie Haller for the episcopacy. Haller currently serves as district superintendent in Grand Rapids, the host district to the July 2008 North Central Jurisdictional Conference.

Haller, 53, who has a broad range of local, regional and global experience in a variety of settings, believes that leadership in the church involves the “risky business” of surrendering to God’s intentions. She said, “I am humbled by the many opportunities that God has given us to help shape a future of hope. My prayer for The United Methodist Church is that we would be passionate leaders, working together to shape a world where all can experience the discipleship journey as one of grace and shalom.”

In addition to her church and community leadership, she is an avid marathoner and tri-athlete and an accomplished musician. She and her husband, the Rev. Gary Haller, have three young adult children.

To date Haller joins a field of five candidates for the episcopacy in the North Central Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church which includes both North and South Indiana conferences. Other candidates (in alpha order) include: the Rev. Dr. David Alan Bard of the Minnesota Conference, the Rev. Dr. Timothy Bias of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference, the Rev. Randolph Cross of the Dakotas Conference and the Rev. Dr. Larry Pickens of the Northern Illinois Conference. – West Michigan Conference UMC

METHODIST CHURCH OF SOUTHERN AFRICA TO BUILD SEMINARY

The Methodist Church of Southern Africa is working to open a Methodist seminary that will develop leaders to transform the church and the nation of South Africa.

“Leadership is the gift and skill of moving other people into transformative action in the world,” said the Rev. Peter Storey, former bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa.

During a Feb. 4 presentation sponsored by the Upper Room, a ministry of the United Methodist Board of Discipleship, Storey talked about the challenges faced by his country – poverty, pandemic diseases, crime, corruption, racism, education crises and environmental degradation.

Storey is chairman of the project to open the new seminary, which is scheduled to enroll its first 35 students next January. The seminary will provide candidates for the ministry with three years of residential, spiritual and academic training and internships – instead of the current six years of on-the-job training.

The new seminary is to be located within the Pietermaritzburg Cluster, a center of ecumenical theological institutions including the School of Religion and Theology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, near Durban. – UMNS

GATES FOUNDATION INVITES CHURCH TO APPLY FOR GRANT

The United Methodist Church has been invited to apply for up to $5 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the United Nations Foundation to underwrite a campaign to strengthen its global health ministries.

The fundraising, education and outreach campaign would aim to raise $100 million over three years and especially would support the church’s efforts to eradicate malaria and other diseases of poverty in Africa.

Bishop Janice Riggle Huie, president of the United Methodist Council of Bishops, received the invitation in mid-January through the United Nations Foundation, which is helping to facilitate the grant process.

The invitation to apply for a Gates Foundation grant represents “an extraordinary opportunity” for the people of The United Methodist Church, said Elizabeth Gore, executive director of partnership alliances for the U.N. Foundation. – UMNS

INDY INNER-CITY CHURCH SEEKS SET OF ENGLISH HANDBELLS

An inner-city church in Indianapolis seeks a set of English handbells to start a choir in this church. The choir has a very small budget. Is there a church that has a set of bells gathering dust in a closet that would loan them or sell them? If so, please contact Jan Jackson at jmjackson815@att.net or by home phone 317-839-7237 or cell phone 317-313-7526.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH – THERE IS A BALM IN GILEAD

The origin of the BALM IN GILEAD* tune is lost to history. We don’t even know if this is the original tune that accompanied these words. This hymn appeared in the 1889 Methodist Hymnal with a different tune, but the tune in our present hymnal, as with most other publications, is the traditional tune. This Spiritual is among the best known and loved among American congregations. It appears in most of our hymnals and songbooks, including The United Methodist Hymnal (1989), Mil Voces Para Celebrar (Spanish United Methodist Hymnal), Come, Let Us Worship (Korean-English Bilingual United Methodist Hymnal), Songs of Zion, and Zion Still Sings in a variety of settings. It is often included in concert and recital programs and in numerous choral arrangements and recordings. Here are three very different versions:

In whatever setting or arrangement, and whether it is sung by soloist, choir, or congregation, the message of “There Is a Balm in Gilead” is that regardless of circumstances, in Jesus there is a promise of healing, hope, and liberation.

*Gilead is a mountainous region east of the Jordan River in modern Jordan.
