NEWS AND INFORMATION

OAKWOOD INN, PROPERTY RETURNS TO NORTH INDIANA CONFERENCE

Members of the Oakwood Foundation for Adult Ministries board announced March 19 they returned the property, formerly known as Oakwood Park, to the North Indiana Conference of The United Methodist Church. The foundation said it was no longer able to operate the Oakwood Christian Retreat & Conference Center in Syracuse as an adult Christian ministry.

Oakwood, on the shore of Lake Wawasee in northern Indiana, includes the Oakwood Inn and restaurant, program center, academy center, a chapel and 42 acres.

The North Indiana Conference Board of Trustees officially received the property on March 19 in accordance with Oakwood Foundation by-laws and the action of the 1993 North Indiana Conference session of the church, when the Oakwood Foundation took possession of the property.

The Oakwood Foundation said it would complete its commitments to existing customers by continuing operations of the ministry through Labor Day of this year with financial assistance from the North Indiana Conference. The foundation will cease activities at Oakwood at the end of the day on Monday, Sept. 1.

The Trustees of the North Indiana Conference voted to receive the property, with the approval of Indiana Area Bishop Mike Coyner and Conference’s district superintendents acting between annual conference sessions as prescribed by church law. The Trustees also voted to sell the entire property. After the property is sold and all debts are paid, the Board of Trustees will bring a proposal for its approval to the North Indiana Conference about the use of any net proceeds.

Oakwood Park was founded in 1893 by the Evangelical Church, a predecessor denomination of The United Methodist Church.

GOVERNOR DANIELS SIGNS PULL-TAB BILL

Hoosier taverns will be allowed to offer pull-tabs and other small stakes games under legislation Gov. Mitch Daniels signed into law on Wednesday.

House Enrolled Act 1153 allows taverns to offer pull tabs, tip boards and punchboards starting July 1. The highest price for a game under the law would be $1 with a maximum payout of about $500. The games only would be allowed at taverns, which the law defines as establishments that primarily serve alcohol. Rep. Dennis Tyler, D-Muncie, estimated that between 2,000 and 3,000 businesses would be allowed to offer the games.

In a statement released this afternoon, Daniels said he reluctantly signed the bill and would “defer to the clear will of the people’s representatives.”

He continued, “Hoosiers believe in freedom, but also in personal responsibility in the exercise of our liberties,” Daniels said. “I sign this bill with misgivings and caution, and the hope that any Hoosiers who choose to risk their money in these games will do so responsibly and with extreme care.” -- The Indianapolis Star

Editor’s note – This is the second year in a row that Gov. Daniels has signed bills which expand legalized gambling in Indiana. In 2006 he campaigned with a promise to oppose the expansion of legalized gambling in Indiana. If you would like to remind the governor of his promise, write to him at mdaniels@gov.in.gov.

NOTED GAMBLING OPPONENT TO SPEAK AT BOTH INDIANA ANNUAL CONFERENCES

Cheered by those who oppose the expansion of gambling and often feared by those who profit from the expansion of legalized gambling, the Rev. Tom Grey is scheduled to speak at both 2008 North Indiana and South Indiana 2008 Annual Conference sessions. Grey is known for his no nonsense presentation of the failure of the gambling industry to deliver on its promises. For nearly 15 years, Grey has been outspoken in his opposition to gambling. It started in Illinois with the introduction of riverboats and has continued in forty-eight states and several foreign countries. He is a retired United Methodist pastor now living on the west coast, but he continues speaking on behalf of the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling (NCALG). Gambling is not winning all or even the majority of the battles in the United States.

Grey will speak about changing the direction of legalized gambling in Indiana. Grey will be at the North Conference on Friday morning May 30 and at the South Conference on Thursday morning June 5. He will address the entire Conference session and will speak at a luncheon. Tickets need to be purchases in advance from each conference center for the luncheon. Additional information will be in pre-conference materials and in this newsletter.

UM MEN TO MEET IN QUADRENNIAL GATHERING IN NASHVILLE, TENN. IN 2009

The 10th national gathering of United Methodist Men is scheduled to be held July 10-11, 2009, on the campus of Belmont University in Nashville. It had previously been held for decades at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. Held once every four years, the event next year will include speeches by Chicago Area Bishop Hee-Soo Jung and the Rev. Kevass Harding, pastor of Dellrose United Methodist Church in Wichita, Kan.

A planning team is negotiating with other nationally known speakers and singers. An informal worship service will be held on Sunday, July 12, for those remaining in the Nashville area.

United Methodist Men is a ministry to and through all men of The United Methodist Church. Among other ministries, it supports the Upper Room Prayer Line, youth-serving agencies including scouting and Big Brothers/Big Sisters; and hunger relief efforts through the Society of St. Andrew.

Men's ministry formally became part of the denominational structure in 1908 when the Methodist Episcopal Church authorized the creation of Methodist Brotherhoods. During 2008, United Methodist Men's groups have held a series of celebrations and special events across the United States in honor of the organization's centennial. – UMNS

UNITED METHODIST CONFERENCES WILL BID FAREWELL TO 16 BISHOPS

Some United Methodist conferences meeting this spring and summer will say goodbye to retiring bishops and become better acquainted with the candidates they have endorsed to succeed them.

The 2008 annual conference sessions will be the last for 11 retiring U.S. bishops. In July, their successors will be chosen by jurisdictional conferences, and the new bishops will begin serving effective Sept. 1. In addition, five bishops from the central conferences – regions in Africa, Asia and Europe – will retire this year or next.

The North Central Jurisdiction Conference, that includes the two Indiana conferences, convenes July 15-19 in Grand Rapids, Mich. Delegates of 12 annual conference in this jurisdiction will elect a bishop to succeed retiring Bishop Sharon Brown Christopher of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference.

The first session of 2008 conference gatherings was held in February when the Northwest Philippines Conference convened. The U.S. gatherings begin in May when the Red Bird Missionary Conference convenes May 9-10 in Coalgood, Ky., and will conclude June 22 with the adjournments of the California-Pacific Annual Conference in Redlands, Calif., and the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference in Moscow, Idaho. – UMNS

CABINET CORNER

WHEN DID YOU LAST SEND A PASTOR?

District Superintendents often sit across the room from Pastor Parish Relations Committees who want a quality pastor for their congregation. This is understandable. “How come our last pastor was so deficient?” – comes the question. “Why can’t we get a good pastor?” – they might ask.

The wise superintendent will then reply, “We get our pastors from you. Will you send us a quality pastor for ministry?” There is no farm where we harvest as many pastors as we need and at the quality we seek.

Pastors are developed in congregations like yours. They are encouraged by pastors and congregations who actively nurture future leaders in God’s work. The bishop and district superintendents can only work with who is before them. Let’s all keep our eyes open for people with gifts and a calling for ordained ministry. If you know of someone, who has the potential for pastoral ministry, let your district superintendent know about him or her.

BIBLE PASSAGE FOR SUNDAY

The angel said to the women, "Don't be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, who was nailed to a cross. He isn't here! God has raised him to life, just as Jesus said he would. Come, see the place where his body was lying. Now hurry! Tell his disciples that he has been raised to life and is on his way to Galilee. Go there, and you will see him. That is what I came to tell you."

The women were frightened and yet very happy, as they hurried from the tomb and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and greeted them. They went near him, held on to his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said, "Don't be afraid! Tell my followers to go to Galilee. They will see me there."

-- Matthew 28:5-10 Contemporary English Version (CEV)

THINKING ABOUT A NEW HYMNAL #1 – WHAT DO WE WANT?

The General Board of Discipleship has recommended to General Conference a new official hymnal for United Methodists in the USA. We have completed work on a four-year music and worship study for General Conference (report is available at www.gbod.org/worship/musicstudy ), and GBOD is currently engaged in additional research regarding a new hymnal.

General Conference will consider the proposal when it meets April 23-May 2, in Fort Worth, Texas. The research conducted as part of the music and worship study as well as the continuing GBOD research has revealed much about what United Methodists think should and should not be included in a new hymnal. This article, the first of a series, discusses what United Methodists are thinking and saying. MOVIE REVIEW

HORTON HEARS A WHO!

  • Production Company: 20th Century Fox Animation
  • Director: Jimmy Hayward, Steve Martino
  • Cast: Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Carol Burnett
  • Rating: G

By Gregg Tubbs

(UMC.org) — "A person’s a person no matter how small.” Ask a random sampling of people where we get that saying and a surprising number will say without hesitation, “Horton Hears a Who!” One of the many talents of Dr. Seuss' uncanny ability to distill sound morality into simple, indelible rhymes. With the new big screen version, I wondered if the charm, imagination and message that have made Horton a “Seussian” classic would survive the modern, CGI treatment and often excessive talents of Jim Carrey as Horton. Well, as Seuss himself may have put it, “With animation divine and performances true, even me (Seuss himself!) can love this Horton Hears a Who!”
