LEGISLATIVE ALERT

PULL TAB BILL HAS A CHANCE TO PASS INDIANA GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The Indiana Senate Appropriation’s Committee heard testimony on HB 1153, Pull Tabs, this past Thursday. NO vote was taken. The committee will vote on the bill this Thursday. Under legislation passed by the Indiana House in January, more than 7,000 bars, taverns and restaurants across the state would be allowed to offer the pull tabs and other forms of low-stakes gambling. This marks the second consecutive year that state legislators have considered proposals that would expand gambling in Indiana.

Many Hoosier are getting fed up with the General Assembly continuing to expand legalized gambling in Indiana. Please protest this expansion by writing your State Senator TODAY.

Thank you. – Indiana Coalition Against Legalized Gambling

Editor’s note: Contact your senator by e-mail. To find his/her e-mail addresses, log on to www.in.gov/cgi-bin/legislative/contact/contact.pl. Don’t know your legislators and need a listing by ZIP code? Log on to www.in.gov/apps/sos/legislator/search/.

OPERATION DOCTOR TO WORK ON NEW MOTHER-CHILD BLOCK AT KISSY

Representatives from Operation Classroom/Doctor, the General Board of Global Ministries, United Methodist Kissy General Hospital, its medical board and the church decided on Saturday, Feb. 9, in Freetown, Sierra Leone to set a common vision of Kissy Hospital. They will pursue funding for the construction of a Mother-Child Block at Kissy Hospital, which would house a maternity and child ward and the nutrition unit.

The goal is to begin construction in 2010, if funding is available,

Operation Classroom/Doctor was asked and agreed to develop a master plan and preliminary plans for the Mother-Child Block by May 1. Included in the plan will be the development of a transitional plan to care for the programs that will be displaced by the construction. All plans will be reviewed and approved by the medical board of the conference.

The General Board of Global Ministries will provide the funds for the development of the site plan and the preliminary drawings of the Mother and Child Health Block.

Operation Classroom will assist in providing funds for the transitional program to care temporarily for the programs that will be displaced due to the construction of the Mother and Child Health Block. – Joe Wagner, Operation Classroom, Operation Doctor

UE EDUCATION STUDENTS HELP 3RD GRADERS CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY

Education students at the United Methodist-related University of Evansville will help a group of local third graders celebrate Black History Month this Tuesday, offering them a tour of the Evansville African-American History Museum.

The group from UE will serve as museum docents for the Dexter Elementary School third graders on Feb. 12. Each of the 18 University juniors will be responsible for a different display in the museum – a responsibility that includes doing extra research on that particular exhibit, as well as being responsible for any general knowledge about Black History.

This idea came about when Sharon Gieselmann, assistant professor of education at UE, and the members of the Black History Month committee at Dexter Elementary school were exploring ideas to celebrate African-American history. Dexter’s principal, Vicki Duncan, and Lana Burton, who is on the board of directors at the museum, attended the meeting, which led to the idea for the university students to be docents for the third graders. – UE

AFRICA UPPER ROOM DIRECTOR GUIDES GROWING MINISTRY

If Roland Rink were to draw a caricature of himself, he would sketch a mangy lion protecting those around him. Except for the mangy part, he’s identified himself aptly, though the lion would have to be a gentle one.

Rink is the managing director for Africa Upper Room Ministries, an arm of Upper Room Ministries headquartered in Eikenhof, South Africa, just outside Johannesburg. The vision for Africa Upper Room is no less than helping every African spend time with God daily.

Established in January 2002, Africa Upper Room coordinates printing and distribution for African editions of The Upper Room daily devotional and other Upper Room resources.

Africa Upper Room represents a new model for international ministry in several key ways, according to Dale Waymack, the ministry’s Nashville, Tenn.,-based Africa region coordinator. Those include “coordinating editorial, production, fulfillment and distribution components of an African publishing system on the continent and … providing a means for drawing people together throughout the continent creating synergy for those with similar passions.” -- UMNS
