The One Great Hour of Sharing offering is essential to UMCOR, gifts to this offering underwrite UMCOR’s “costs of doing business.” That helps us keep our promise that 100 percent of every other gift you make to a specific UMCOR project can be spent on that project-not on home office costs and assisting UMCOR programs that have not been fully funded through designated Advance gifts.
Recently the North Indiana Conference received $15,000 from UMCOR to fulfill the immediate needs of residents for storm relief in North Indiana. These funds were available, because congregations from across the country gave to the “One Great Hour of Sharing” offering last year, making 100 percent of these funds available to those in need.
Offering materials area available by logging on to www.umcgiving.org/content/sundays/OGHS_nav/onegreat.asp. Other resources including bulletin insert, litany of hope, songs, Scripture also can be downloaded from this site by clicking on Worship Resources – UMNS

For 28 years, Francie Markham taught high school English to teenagers in South Carolina. Now that she’s retired from education, she’s helping high school kids in Zimbabwe by providing them with textbooks, blackboards and other school supplies. Markham was inspired to start the Zimbabwe ministry after taking four mission trips to Old Mutare Mission Center and noticed that students at the mission’s Hartzell High School were without textbooks – or lunch. For the past year, Markham has collected supplies donated by churches, businesses, schools and families across South Carolina. A 40-foot-long container packed with supplies is expected to arrive at the school in March. – UMNS
The Rev. Chebon Kernell was raised in two spiritual worlds that some people say have little in common. He’s a lifelong United Methodist who responded to a call to Christian ministry at age 17. And he’s a Seminole Native American, no stranger to the ceremonial traditions of his ancestors. “As a minister,” he said, “I’ve wondered where to draw the line between the two-or whether it should even be drawn.” That issue and others faced by Native Americans in The United Methodist Church were analyzed Feb. 16 at a “listening post” hosted by the denomination’s Native American Comprehensive Plan. Participants spent two hours in small group sessions, sharing stories of evangelism in Native communities. – UMNS
Effective ministry and advocacy related to immigration must begin on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border as a partnership of The United Methodist Church and the Methodist Church of Mexico, according to church leaders along the border. Possibilities for such partnerships were explored during a Feb. 8-10 border consultation called “Abrazando a Mi Prójimo,” or “Embracing My Neighbor,” sponsored by the Methodist Border Mission Network. The event’s goal was to help the church reach across the border and work together as neighbors in common ministry, particularly as the church works to respond to the impact of immigration. – UMNS

President Bush approved the additional aid for these counties: Allen, Benton, Dekalb, Huntington, Kosciusko, Lake, Laporte, Newton, Noble, St. Joseph, Starke and Whitley.
Bonnie Lewis Bumpers, 86, of Conway, Ark., a former director of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries and its Women’s Division, died Feb. 15. She was an instructor in the Women’s Division regional schools of mission and served on the boards of several mission institutions. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Paul M. Bumpers, a daughter, son, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. – UMNS
