KENDALLVILLE PASTOR NEEDS VOLUNTEERS OF UTAH MISSION TRIP

Scott Pattison, pastor of Trinity UMC in Kendallville (NIC), had some last minute cancellations for this year’s mission trip out west. He does need to have a certain number to make this trip occur financially and programmatically, and is slightly under the needed number of participants.

If you have been thinking, or know of someone who was thinking about going on the mission trip to the Navajo in Utah, please have them contact Scott or Anita Pattison as soon as possible at 260-347-3621 or e-mail at gspattison@gmail or akpattison@gmail.com.

This is listed as a “Senior High” camp, but also is an intergenerational experience as well. Here is the Operation Utah link http://www.impact2818.com/sh_camps-utah.html

The trip dates are July 9-21, and the $750 covers all expenses except personal spending.

MISSION NEWS

UNITED METHODISTS SUPPORT INITIAL RELIEF IN CHINA

A United Methodist-supported relief team has been assessing the needs of earthquake survivors in several Chinese villages and distributing emergency supplies.

On May 21, the Amity Foundation team distributed 6.8 tons of oil and 1,700 quilts in the villages of Penghua and Wolong. According to a report from She Hongyu, Amity’s overseas liaison, other materials such as waterproof cloths and rice were being purchased.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief is supporting the relief efforts of the Amity Foundation, a voluntary Chinese Christian organization and longtime partner of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, UMCOR’s parent agency.

Amity and UMCOR are both part of Action by Churches Together International. UMCOR is sending $50,000 to Amity through the ACT International partnership, according to the Rev. Sam Dixon, UMCOR’s chief executive.

Donations to UMCOR’s relief efforts in China can be made to International Disaster Response, China Earthquake, UMCOR Advance #982450. Checks can be dropped in church offering plates or mailed directly to UMCOR, P.O. Box 9068, New York, NY. 10087-9068. Write the Advance number and name on the memo line of the check. Credit-card donations are accepted online at www.givetomission.org or by phone at 800-554-8583.

TWO INDY CHURCHES WORK WITH COALITION IN RURAL KENYA

Global Interfaith Partnership-Indiana is a coalition of 11 Jewish and Christian congregations including North and St. Luke’s United Methodist churches which is working with a counterpart interfaith coalition of congregations in rural western Kenya (Global Interfaith Partnership-Chulaimbo). Together GIP has developed the Umoja Project (“Umoja” is the Kiswahili word for “unity”) which provides services to children orphaned or made vulnerable by the AIDS pandemic and other diseases. North UMC “hosts” the Partnership, serving as fiscal agent to our organization and the Umoja Project.

Recently GIP-Indiana learned it was awarded a $10,000 grant through the UMC Global AIDS Fund. This money will be used to support the educational and psychosocial needs of older youth: paying secondary school tuitions and providing peer support groups through the schools.

According to Ellen Daniels-Howell, executive director, members of GIP-Indiana are eager to get the word out about the Global Interfaith Partnership’s work and the receipt of this support through the Global AIDS Fund. Members of the GIP coalition believe other congregations may be interested in joining our coalition, and believe it is important for United Methodist congregations to know that some of the funds donated to the Global AIDS Fund support international mission projects of congregations.

For more information, e-mail Ellen Daniels-Howell at ellenrdh@sbcglobal.net or call 317-596-9957 or write her c/o North United Methodist Church, 3808 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN 462008.

MISSION TEAM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS FOR HAITI SOLAR OVEN PROJECT

Summer 2008 – Haiti Solar Oven Project UMVIM Team

Have you been considering joining one of our solar oven mission teams to Haiti? We make every effort to field three United Methodist Volunteers In Mission teams per year with up to 12 volunteers per team. If you have you been contemplating a mission to Haiti, now might be the perfect opportunity! Don’t hesitate to call or write with questions. Contact Rick Jost at 605-692-3391 or e-mail rjost@brookings.net.
