Policies for Making Grants

The following policies shall give direction to the Board and its Committee on Grants for granting funds to agencies, institutions or persons requesting financial assistance.

  1. Grant requests shall be submitted in writing on the prescribed form with required supporting documents attached.

  2. Persons or projects that express a fundamental Christian mission exemplified in the life of Jesus Christ shall be favorably viewed.

  3. Deserving requests shall have an emphasis on United Methodist short-and long-term mission projects without regard to race, gender, or economic status.

  4. Each request shall be considered on its own merit. Examples of low-priority requests include those for: Transportation, operating budget support, capital funding and/or endowment building.

  5. Grants from Foundation trusts will be made within the restrictions established by the founding donor(s).

  6. Grants authorized from trusts which give the Board complete discretion, and grants authorized from Operating Funds, shall be limited to two thousand dollars ($2,000) per calendar year.

  7. Priority consideration shall be given to missional projects within the state of Indiana.

  • Funding support shall be for tasks/projects that involve one or more United Methodist volunteers from Indiana.

  • Positive consideration for support shall be directed to group projects/activities that lead to Christian commitment; e.g., Volunteer-In-Mission and local church Outreach Ministry projects.

  • Due consideration shall be given to supporting missional programs sponsored by the Indiana Area Foundation of  The United Methodist Church

  1. Scholarships for Christian higher education shall receive positive consideration.

Grants made for seminary scholarships shall be made to United Methodist students attending United Methodist institutions before considering United Methodist students attending non-United Methodist schools.

Grants made for higher education scholarships shall be drawn from donor restricted accounts for said purpose before being drawn from other approved funds by the Board.

Mission Grant Application Guidelines

  1. All inquiries regarding the grants program of the Indiana Area Foundation of the United Methodist Church, Inc., and application requests, should be directed to the Executive Director of the Indiana Area Foundation of the United Methodist Church, 1100 West 42ndStreet, Suite 210, Indianapolis, IN, 46208; or e-mail: jgentry@inareaumc.org.

  2. Requests/applications for grants shall be made to the Indiana Area Foundation through the chair of the Committee on Grants prior to the appropriate review date in February, April, July, or October.

  3. Applications must show a clear need and not be fully funded from other sources or totally funded by the Indiana Area Foundation.

  4. Grants from the Indiana Area Foundation may not be approved to fund other foundations or endowment funds.

  5. Applications for grants shall:

  • Be from an Indiana Area agency, institution or mission/project.

  • Provide detail of income sources and expenses for the project.

  • Provide detailed description of the organization's or missioner's purpose and scope of endeavor.

  • Provide details of its legal and administrative structure, including State and Federal Tax Exempt status.

  1. Notification of action taken on grant requests will be made within 30 days following each scheduled grants request review date.

Higher Education Scholarship Grant Application Guidelines

Applicants for a higher education scholarship grant from the Indiana Area Foundation should carefully follow these procedures:

  1. All inquiries regarding the grants program of the Indiana Area Foundation of the United Methodist Church, Inc. , and application requests, should be directed to the Executive Director of the Indiana Area Foundation of the United Methodist Church, 1100  West 42nd Street, Suite 210, Indianapolis, IN, 46208; or e-mail: jgentry@inareaumc.org.

  2. Request/application for Education Scholarship Grant shall be made to the Indiana Area Foundation through the Chair of the Committee on Grants prior to the appropriate review date in February, April, July, or October.

  3. Educational scholarships are limited in amount and number, and therefore applicants will be screened based upon need, trust restrictions, and other criteria appropriate to the mission of the Indiana Area Foundation as interpreted by the Grants Committee.

  4. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make the initial contact and file the application as early as possible for the Grants Committee to accomplish its work in time for any financial deadlines the student may need to meet.

  5. The Executive Director will inform the applicant of the action taken by the Grants Committee on the scholarship request within 30 days of the review date.
