Keith named new superintendent for Indianapolis churches

Indiana Area Bishop Woodie W. White has appointed the Rev. J. William Keith, Jr. to serve as superintendent of the United Methodist Church's Indianapolis East District, effective July 1. Keith will succeed the Rev. William Schwein who has held the position since 2000. Schwein will become senior pastor of Sunrise at Geist United Methodist Church in Indianapolis.

William Keith's first pastoral appointment was at Hamlet UMC, in North Indiana. He has served churches in the South Indiana Conference for 26 years, at Petersville UMC, Corydon UMC, DePauw Memorial UMC in New Albany, Sandy Hook UMC in Columbus, and most recently St. Mark's UMC in Bloomington where he has served for the past two years.

When asked what he hopes to accomplish during his tenure as superintendent, Keith says, "I hope to be as supportive as possible to the pastors and churches of the district to help fulfill their mission."

Keith holds a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Evansville. He has been a member of the Franklin United Methodist (retirement) Community Board of Directors since 2001. Also, he chairs the Division of Elders for the Board of Ordained Ministry in South Indiana.

The Indianapolis East District consists of 65 churches with a combined membership of approximately 20,832. It covers Hamilton, Hancock, Johnson and Marion Counties.
