Release at will

Robert Dexter to be United Methodist superintendent of Marion District

Bishop Woodie W. White has appointed the Rev. Robert J. Dexter as the superintendent of the United Methodist Church's Marion District, effective June 16. Currently, Dexter is pastor of Trinity UMC in Fort Wayne, where he has led the 387-member congregation since 1992.

His predecessor as Marion District superintendent was the Rev. Jacob C. Williams, Jr., who, after nearly six years on the Cabinet, was appointed senior pastor of Good Shepherd UMC, Fort Wayne, last Feb. 1. The Rev. Roy Eaton then came out of retirement to serve as interim superintendent from Feb.1 to June 2.

Marion District is comprised of 66 churches with a combined total of 9,476 members. The geographical area of the district includes Blackford, Grant and Madison Counties.

Before his tenure at Trinity UMC, Dexter served pastorates at St. Andrew UMC in West Lafayette as well as churches at Waterloo, Mulberry and Congress St. UMC in Lafayette.

Dexter was working toward a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering at Indiana Institute of Technology when, through his involvement with the Inter-varsity Christian Fellowship, he felt a call to ministry. He completed his science degree in 1969, then went on to Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky. where he earned a masters of divinity degree in 1972. He was ordained an elder of the North Indiana Conference in 1973.

Key areas of service beyond the local church include the North Indiana Conference Board of Ordained Ministry from 1980 to '88, serving as vice president the last six of those years. He's also been a member of the Division of Ministry Development since 1978 and is currently its chairperson.
