Indiana Methodists make e-connection

Church news is going digital for United Methodists in Indiana. Feb. 15 will mark the rollout of the first posting of "e-HUM," an electronic news and information service.

e-HUM is a new mid-month news posting, sent via e-mail, to a list of lay and clergy subscribers. The Indiana connection consists of approximately 230,250 members across the state, most of whom have access to a computer.

The church's news magazine, the Hoosier United Methodist News, is mailed to the homes of lay and clergy members monthly, and a digital version is available online. But e-HUM will help bridge the gap between issues. This new informational pipeline will also be used to get urgent news, special messages from the bishop, timely announcements, job opportunities and other time-sensitive information out to our members and pastors virtually in an instant.

The terrorist attack on Sept. 11 made us realize how critical it is for Indiana United Methodist Communications to utilize the new technology in order to maintain a 24/7 contact capability with our churches. e-HUM will make this possible. Associate Director of Communications, Matt Carlisle, will manage e-HUM and is currently working on developing the subscriber base.

"In the 1940s the main communications concern for churches was that everyone have a telephone. Now, the concern is that everyone have access to e-mail, so that critical information can be delivered to everyone immediately," Carlisle says. "Next time there's a public crisis, we want to be able to communicate with our members on a moment's notice."
